SANTO DOMINGO. The incorporation of new mass transit infrastructure at kilometer 9 of the Duarte Highway will be accompanied by a reorganization of the feeder routes that converge in this area, with the purpose of integrating different sectors of Greater Santo Domingo to Line 2C of the Santo Domingo Metro and the new cable car station.
The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT) and the Metropolitan Transportation Company (EMT) are making progress in planning this scheme, which seeks to incorporate feeder routes into the new mobility model that will operate in this important transportation hub.
As part of this coordination, the executive director of INTRANT, Juan Manuel Méndez, and the executive vice president of EMT and executive director of FITRAM, Jhael Isa Tavárez, conducted a technical tour of the area to evaluate the current operating conditions of the routes and the spaces designated for passenger transfer.
Feeder routes as part of the new scheme
One of the components that is planned to be incorporated into the project is precisely the organized operation of feeder routes, which will allow passengers from different sectors to connect with the Metro and Cable Car stations.
The intention is that these do not operate in isolation, but rather form part of an integrated transport scheme, making it easier for users to reach kilometer 9 and transfer to mass transit systems.
During the technical survey, those that currently converge in the environment were evaluated, as well as the possibility of reorganizing their routes and connection points to adapt them to the new infrastructure.
This planning will determine which stations can directly feed the new model, how spaces for passenger boarding and disembarking will be distributed, and what conditions are necessary to ensure a more orderly flow of traffic.
A strategic point for mobility
The upcoming integration of Metro Line 2C and the new cable car station will transform kilometer 9 into a strategic connection point within the transportation network of Greater Santo Domingo.
Therefore, the project envisions a plan that goes beyond simply building new infrastructure. Reorganizing feeder routes will be essential to ensure that users in areas without direct access to the Metro or Cable Car can benefit from these new mobility options.
During the tour, vehicular traffic, accessibility, passenger flow, and the conditions of spaces designated for transfers between different modes of transport were also analyzed.
Representatives from the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transport (DIGESETT) and the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) also participated in the survey , as part of the inter-institutional coordination to coordinate operations and road conditions in the surrounding area.
Integration of the different systems
The ultimate goal is to establish a model in which feeder routes function as a link between nearby neighborhoods and sectors and mass transit systems, allowing passengers to complete their journeys through different alternatives in a coordinated manner.
INTRANT and EMT will continue working on defining the operational scheme, including the reorganization of existing routes and their incorporation into the new mobility model.
With this planning, Line 2C, the Cable Car and the feeder routes will become part of a joint strategy to improve connectivity in Greater Santo Domingo and facilitate the journeys of thousands of users who use public transport daily.
