Road Construction Begins: Cabral-Polo Highway Inaugurated by the Government Will Strengthen Southern Road Connection

The Cabral-Polo highway, inaugurated by the Government, will strengthen the road connection in the south

The Polo-Enriquillo section, 30.9 kilometers long, would be completed before the end of 2026, said Eduardo Estrella, Minister of Public Works

In Barahona, President Luis Abinader inaugurated the Cabral-Polo highway this weekend , which will strengthen the province's road connectivity. The president also announced that the bidding process for the Duvergé-Puerto Escondido-Pedernales highway will be published in the coming months.

“Polo is one of the most productive municipalities, but also has enormous tourism potential,” said the head of state.

He said the road is part of a strategic plan to create business opportunities in this area of natural, ecological and cultural wealth and, in addition, to expand communication with Pedernales, so that cruise ship passengers arriving at the Cabo Rojo port can easily travel to the Magnetic Pole.

A runner of more than 50 km

Eduardo Estrella, Minister of Public Works, announced that the rehabilitation of the 20.5 kilometers improves the mobility conditions for families and, together with the Polo-Enriquillo section, of 30.9 kilometers and which would be completed before the end of 2026, forms part of a corridor of more than 50 kilometers that connects communities in the interior of Barahona with the coast and strengthens a connection route towards Pedernales and Cabo Rojo, one of the main centers of tourist development that is currently promoting the Southern region.

Southern road transformation

The communities of Polo, Arroyo Dulce, El Higüero and El Naranjal, which had been demanding better conditions for this connection for years, now have a safe and reliable infrastructure, explains the Presidency.

He adds that the works incorporated interventions related to drainage, water channeling, slope stabilization and signage, fundamental to preserving the functionality of the road in the face of the terrain conditions and the rains.

200 km from the capital

The municipality of Cabral is located 200 kilometers from the Dominican capital. It was the first community founded in what is now Barahona province. It is known for fishing and agriculture and is one of the areas in the country with the most abundant water resources.

Bani Ring Road

Last August, the current administration inaugurated the Baní bypass, also located in the southern Dominican Republic. President Abinader highlighted that the new road will reduce travel time between Santo Domingo and Barahona by approximately one hour, easing congestion in the city center and improving freight and passenger transport. The bypass spans 19.8 kilometers and includes 17 bridges, benefiting communities such as the Emma Balaguer Project, Playa Monte Rio, La Estancia, Puerto Viejo, Las Clavelinas, La Ceiba, La Ciénega, Sabana Yegua, Las Barias, El Rosario, and the Azua Free Trade Zone.
