CODESACO and community leaders ask to recover land donated for works in San Isidro

The entity and the Our Lady of Fatima Parish maintain that the 26,884.47 square meter property was ceded to the Santo Domingo East City Council to build a central park, a sports center and a municipal palace

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Community Development Council (CODESACO), the Our Lady of Fatima Parish and community representatives from San Isidro requested the intervention of the authorities to achieve the peaceful recovery of some lands given to the Santo Domingo East City Council, where the construction of several infrastructures for collective benefit was planned.

According to a document presented by the claimants, the Reserve Bank of the Dominican Republic (Banreservas) formalized the donation to the city council on February 4, 2022, with the purpose of building a central park, a covered sports center and a municipal palace.

As support for their request, the organization, headed by Noemí Cuevas, made copies of the donation deed and the title certificate available to the media.

The donation includes three community projects

The property is located on Nueva Street, in the El Bonito sector of San Isidro, and covers an area of 26,884.47 square meters. According to the documentation, it is identified by the number 401489136491 and the registration number 0100191918.

In that regard, Article One of the act establishes the transfer of ownership to the Santo Domingo East City Council. Furthermore, Paragraph II specifies that the space must be used to build a central park, an indoor sports complex, and a municipal building.

The promoters of the initiative believe that these infrastructures would boost the social, sporting, recreational and institutional development of San Isidro and the surrounding towns.

They warn about the occupation of spaces

Furthermore, community representatives expressed concern about the occupation of a considerable part of the property, where, they denounced, individuals have built homes that reduce the area available for the planned projects.

They also questioned the dissemination of information that, in their view, contradicts the purpose stated in the donation document.

The organization explained that Father Nicolás Cuello Hernández, parish priest of Our Lady of Fatima, and members of CODESACO received copies of the act and the title certificate from the then mayor Manuel Jiménez, documents that they now exhibit as the basis of their claim.

They urge the authorities to foster dialogue

Although they acknowledged the housing needs of the families settled on the site, community leaders insisted on the importance of preserving property rights, legal security, and the social purpose assigned to the land.

In light of this situation, Father Nicolás Cuello called for sensible and prudent action, while urging the parties to prioritize dialogue and avoid confrontations, with a view to achieving a peaceful, fair, and lawful solution.

Similarly, CODESACO, the parish, and local leaders asked the Government and the relevant municipal and national authorities to intervene to facilitate the recovery of the property and ensure that the purpose of the donation is fulfilled.

They highlight the impact of the works in San Isidro

The document notes that the property is located opposite a daycare center and the El Bonito Educational City, projects that community members consider relevant to the educational and social progress of the area.

Therefore, they understand that the construction of the central park, the covered sports center and the municipal palace would complement these facilities, by offering spaces for training, sports practice, recreation and the provision of municipal services.

Finally, the representatives reiterated that their initiative does not intend to create conflicts with the families residing in the area, but rather to protect a heritage that, they claim, was reserved for the benefit of the entire community.
