The institution submitted a report with structural reinforcement recommendations to reduce the seismic vulnerability of the building formerly occupied by INPOSDOM
SANTO DOMINGO.- The National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie) delivered to the General Directorate of Museums (DGM) a technical report on the structural conditions of the old building of the Dominican Postal Institute (INPOSDOM), in Santiago de los Caballeros, where the Museum of History and Traditions of that city is planned to be installed.
The document includes the findings of the detailed assessment and a reinforcement proposal to reduce risks from possible earthquakes, as part of the preparations to adapt the building to its future cultural function.
The delivery was made by a commission from Onesvie, headed by its deputy director general, engineer Nítida Sánchez, who presented the report to the director general of Museums, Joan Ferrer.
The study includes the characteristics of the building and the conditions identified during the technical inspections, as well as recommendations on the interventions that could be carried out to improve its safety.
The work was carried out jointly by the regional delegations of Northern Santiago and Puerto Plata, under the direction of engineer Galvy Núñez, in charge of the former, while the structural analysis and the preparation of the reinforcement proposal were in charge of engineer Ernesto Polanco Grant.
Engineer Fanny Ramos, the entity's regional director, also participated in the commission.
According to Onesvie, the results will serve as a reference to guide decisions about the necessary works before the building is designated for museum activities.
Project seeks to preserve the history of Santiago
The former INPOSDOM headquarters is part of an adaptation initiative that seeks to convert the space into a center to preserve and disseminate the history and traditions of Santiago de los Caballeros.
In this sense, the structural evaluation constitutes a contribution to the project, by providing specialized information to consider the safety conditions of the building during its future commissioning.
The institution highlighted that this type of study contributes to reducing the vulnerability of buildings and promoting safer spaces for citizens.
Onesvie strengthens prevention against seismic risks
The delivery of the report falls within the functions of Onesvie, the body responsible for evaluating the vulnerability of infrastructure and buildings in the Dominican Republic, as well as formulating technical recommendations to mitigate risks associated with natural and human-caused phenomena.
For its part, the General Directorate of Museums, a branch of the Ministry of Culture, is responsible for the implementation of public policies related to the administration, conservation and operation of national museums.
