Government oversees progress of strategic projects at Punta Cana Airport

PUNTA CANA, LA ALTAGRACIA PROVINCE- The Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation reported yesterday, Friday, that it carried out a follow-up day at the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), to evaluate the progress of the projects for the modification and segregation of the two runways, as well as the Restructuring of Dominican Airspace (READ).

The agency's director general, Igor Rodríguez Durán, led the visit along with technicians from IDAC and representatives of the airport operator, according to a statement from the state entity.

The information specifies that the initiative will increase the capacity for managing airspace and will contribute significantly to strengthening the operational safety of civil aviation in the Dominican Republic.

He explains that during the day, the progress of the air traffic control personnel training process was also supervised, confirming that the work schedule is progressing as planned.

The state representative thanked Giovanni Rainieri, head of Airside Operations at Punta Cana International Airport, and his entire team for their collaboration and ongoing willingness to continue promoting these projects, which are fundamental to the strengthening and sustainable development of Dominican civil aviation.

An airport with history

Opened in 1983, PUJ is the world's first privately owned airport for international commercial use, handling 68% of the country's tourist air traffic, connecting with 75 cities in 34 countries through 58 airlines, moving more than 9 million passengers and transporting more than 25 million kilos of cargo annually, according to data from Grupo Puntacana, founder of the air terminal.

Upon reaching its 40th anniversary in 2024, its executives reported that the airport had transported more than 120 million passengers by that date.

To the rhythm of the new era

In their anniversary speech for their four decades in the market, executives cited the new tools implemented to adapt the facilities to the new era of aviation, highlighting technological implementations such as biometric smart paths for agent-free check-in, self-service kiosks and mobile technology with quick and secure biometric registration and enrollment, self-service baggage drop-off with biometric verification, single or double electronic self-service boarding gates, and automated access and border control.

They also emphasized the self-service flight check-in kiosks, e-gate migration, 10 state-of-the-art body scanners, 8 tomographic machines and 4 automated machines, stressing that it is one of the most modern in equipment in all of Latin America.

Punta Cana Airport has two runways, 33 boarding gates, 38 aircraft parking positions, and seven VIP lounges. It also has its own Recycling and Incineration Center, where 60% of the waste it generates is recycled.
