Earthquakes shake Spain and Venezuela, leaving injuries, material damage, and preventive evacuations

Emergency teams remain deployed to assess potential damage and respond to incidents

SANTO DOMINGO - A series of earthquakes shook various areas of Spain and Venezuela on Tuesday, where authorities activated emergency and monitoring protocols in response to the tremors, according to the EFE news agency.

In the European country, at least six significant earthquakes were recorded in the Granada metropolitan area within a few hours, while Venezuela reported a magnitude 4.0 tremor in the coastal state of La Guaira. The tremors caused material damage and required medical assistance in Spain, while in Venezuela, no damage has been reported so far.

Granada records several seismic movements

A series of earthquakes prompted numerous residents and visitors to take to the streets in various parts of the Granada metropolitan area. According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the first tremor occurred at 10:37 a.m., reached a magnitude of 4.8, and was centered in Gójar.

Later, further tremors were recorded in towns on the southern slopes of the metropolitan area. These included a magnitude 4.0 earthquake in Churriana de la Vega and another of 4.2, recorded at 11:34 in Alhendín. Later, at 12:39, another tremor of magnitude 4.2 was again centered in Gójar.

The seismic activity has so far left three people with minor injuries and caused material damage, falling debris and glass, as well as preventive evacuations of some buildings.

Public buildings close in Granada

In response to the series of earthquakes, the City Council and the Provincial Council of Granada ordered the preventive closure of non-healthcare public buildings.

Emergency teams remain deployed to assess potential damage and respond to incidents. One of the areas with the highest concentration of reports is the Zaidín neighborhood, one of the city's most densely populated areas.

The 112 emergency service received over 500 calls related to the seismic activity. Medical teams coordinated around a dozen incidents, primarily involving anxiety attacks and episodes of nervousness, as well as cases related to falls and injuries caused by falling debris.

Venezuela reports a magnitude 4.0 earthquake

Also in Venezuela, a new earthquake of magnitude 4.0 was recorded this Tuesday in the coastal state of La Guaira, one of the areas affected by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occurred last month.

The Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (Funvisis) reported that the epicenter was located 10 kilometers northwest of La Guaira, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, reported via her Telegram account that, following the earthquake, the Protection System was activated to carry out the corresponding monitoring and follow-up.

"So far, we have no reports of any kind of damage," said Rodríguez, who assured that the authorities remain vigilant to guarantee the safety of the population.

The tremor occurred at 3:07 p.m. local time (07:07 GMT), and was also felt in several areas of Caracas.

Authorities in both countries are keeping emergency systems active and continue to assess the situation in case of further aftershocks or seismic activity.
