Americas Connect is the new network of submarine cables with which Google will link the Dominican Republic with Europe and America
SANTO DOMINGO.- Yesterday, Wednesday, August 12, the Dominican government announced a second phase of the digital exchange hub of the multinational company Google in the Dominican Republic, highlighting that it strengthens the country's capacity to integrate into the main trends of the global digital economy.
On Tuesday, Google announced an expansion of its connectivity infrastructure in the Americas, with three new submarine cable systems that will connect the Dominican Republic to various points on the global map.
Although the company cited three, the information from the Ministry of the Presidency only mentions Canoas and Alisios. OlaLuz, the third mentioned in the tech giant's statement, was not included.
The Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, made the announcement within the framework of the forty-first Annual Conference and Exhibition of the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Organizations (CANTO), where Paliza participated in the panel “Protecting ICT networks in the age of AI: from the sea to the cloud and to space”, along with Google's Director of Global Infrastructure, Cristian Ramos.
“The Dominican Republic is beginning to establish itself as the technological and digital hub of the entire region. The investment of companies like Google in our digital infrastructure allows us to strengthen our connectivity and prepares us to participate more effectively in the major global economic trends,” said Paliza.
The Alisios cable will connect the Dominican Republic with the United States, Europe, and South America, while Canoa will expand the country's international links and strengthen its connection with other important points in the regional digital infrastructure.
The official highlighted that this new stage is part of a process of strengthening the Dominican technological infrastructure, which includes investments in connectivity, artificial intelligence and data centers.
“For us, these operations are not just about costs and revenues. They are also about building and strengthening long-term relationships with reliable partners who are committed to the development of the Dominican Republic,” he said.
He also reiterated the importance of international collaboration for the development of this infrastructure and pointed to the United States as the Dominican Republic's main ally, while also valuing the role of private investment in the diversification and modernization of the national economy.
Geographic location and infrastructure conditions drive
During the meeting, Google's Global Infrastructure Director, Cristian Ramos, highlighted the Dominican Republic's geographic location and infrastructure conditions as factors that favor the development of new connectivity projects.
He noted that, in the last five months, Google has announced the construction of four submarine cables linked to the Dominican Republic, reflecting the strategic importance that the company attributes to the country within its global infrastructure.
The executive agreed with Paliza on the importance of establishing long-term relationships and stressed that this type of alliance is one of Google's priorities.
With these investments, the Dominican Republic strengthens its international connectivity infrastructure and advances its positioning as a technological and digital hub in the Caribbean, with the capacity to attract new investments linked to artificial intelligence, data centers and the digital economy, the Ministry's statement highlights.
