Home automation has driven the evolution of terrace enclosures and roofs in recent years. Therefore, the dilemma is no longer so simple, as roofs are no longer static but adapt to different parameters: from the time of day to the degree of opening, all with the aim of achieving energy efficiency and creating a more pleasant and dynamic space according to needs. "In any case, the performance of both retractable and fixed roofs is similar," experts say.
Advantages and disadvantages of retractable roofs
Talking about retractable roofs involves discussing several advantages: "with this type of roof we have the possibility of opening and closing the structure at any time, so we have greater freedom to decide how and when to use the terrace.".
In addition to this key feature, the space can be adjusted to provide more or less light depending on the time of day. “Furthermore, retractable roofs ensure a good level of thermal and acoustic insulation.
Regarding the drawbacks of retractable roofs, the options boil down to one main one: the price, as they are more expensive structures than fixed roofs. “Their maintenance is also more delicate and requires more care than fixed roofs.”.
Another aspect to consider is aesthetics, since in the case of retractable roofs these allow for a smaller selection of designs or natural materials.
Finally, a retractable roof requires more maintenance than a fixed one, since we must check that the openings are carried out correctly and this may involve certain periodic inspections.
Advantages and disadvantages of fixed roofs
Paradoxically, the advantages and disadvantages of retractable roofs often reflect the same view as fixed roofs. However, when it comes to highlighting the benefits of this option, the advantages are quite surprising: even though the structure is "fixed," you can always choose the amount of light that enters the space depending on the terrace's orientation and various options – from a transparent roof to one with diffused light or completely opaque.
This factor allows us to save time when deciding when to fold the roof or not, since we will have installed a fixed roof depending on the solar incidence or other everyday factors.
Fixed roofs are also a recommended option in areas with cold or very rainy climates, while retractable roofs are more suitable for warm and sunny areas.
Another advantage of fixed roofs is their lack of limitation regarding space or surface area, making them more versatile than movable roofs, which require minimum dimensions to facilitate installation.
On the other hand, fixed roofs tend to be less bright unless you opt for a glazed structure. In this respect, retractable roofs provide a greater sense of spaciousness and allow light to penetrate the terrace or garden more easily.
Both retractable and fixed roofs are equally valid options. “It’s possible to create a suitable ceiling for any room, provided that, in the case of retractable roofs, you consider the cost and maintenance factors. If you opt for a fixed ceiling, these aspects will be less important.”.
