Success is not the absence of failures; it is not losing hope

For many years I thought successful people were those who hardly ever made mistakes. Over time I discovered I was wrong.

After forty years in the Dominican real estate sector, I've met extraordinary developers, entrepreneurs, investors, and advisors. And I can say something that might surprise many: I haven't met a single truly successful person who hasn't failed several times.

Everyone has made mistakes. They've bought the wrong land. They've launched projects at difficult times. They've lost clients.
They've signed agreements that didn't work out. They've made decisions that, in hindsight, they would have made differently.

The difference isn't that they failed less. The difference is that they never lost hope.

I recently heard a phrase that made me think deeply: "Success is an accumulation of failures without losing hope." The more I think about it, the more sense it makes.

Because if we analyze any success story, we'll find a long list of failed attempts, obstacles, rejections, and setbacks. What we almost never see is everything that happened before reaching the final result.

We see the finished building, but not the revised plans. We see the closed sale, but not the dozens of clients who said no. We see the established company, but not the years of uncertainty that lay behind it.

In our real estate sector, this happens every day. An agent can go weeks without closing a sale. A developer can see approvals delayed. A project can progress more slowly than expected. A client can give up after months of follow-up.

And it is precisely in those moments that the true test appears. It is not a test of knowledge. It is not a test of experience. It is a test of illusion.

Because real failure doesn't happen when a sale falls through. Real failure happens when we stop believing. When we stop calling. When we stop learning. When we stop trying. When we lose the enthusiasm to keep going.

As long as there's hope, there's still a chance. I've seen incredibly talented people give up too soon. I've also seen seemingly ordinary people achieve extraordinary results simply because they never stopped getting back up after every fall.

Enthusiasm has enormous power. It's what makes an advisor call a client again after receiving several rejections. It's what makes a developer continue developing projects even after facing difficulties. It's what makes an entrepreneur start again when others would have given up.

Perhaps that's why today I wouldn't define success as the absence of failures. I would define it as the ability to keep moving forward despite them.

Because every mistake teaches a lesson. Every stumble provides experience. Every obstacle strengthens character. And when we accumulate enough learning without losing hope, others begin to call it success.

Therefore, my message to the advisors, promoters, and professionals in our sector is simple: Don't be ashamed of your failures. Learn from them. Study them. Correct them. But never let them steal your enthusiasm.
