Remittances constitute one of the main sources of foreign currency in the Dominican economy, with inflows exceeding US$10 billion annually, according to data from the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic. This positions them as a structural component of the national financial system. In this context, the incorporation of new digital channels for receiving remittances directly impacts the efficiency, formalization, and speed of circulation of these resources within the domestic market.
Qik Banco Digital Dominicano, SA – Banco Múltiple, a subsidiary of Grupo Popular and the country's first neobank, announced that its customers can now receive international remittances directly to their Qik Visa debit cards. According to the bank, funds are credited in less than 30 minutes, provided the international remittance companies operate on the Visa Direct platform and have enabled transfers to the Dominican Republic.
Payment infrastructure and connection with Visa Direct
From a technical perspective, the integration with Visa Direct connects Qik to one of the most widespread electronic transfer platforms internationally, used for near-instant payments between financial institutions. This type of technology significantly reduces traditional bank clearing times and strengthens the interoperability of the Dominican financial system with global digital payment networks.
The use of Visa Direct also strengthens the traceability of transactions, by allowing funds to circulate within the formal financial system from the moment they are credited, without the need for intermediate cash-based processes.
Operating conditions and cost structure
According to Qik, receiving remittances on the Qik Visa debit card is free for the recipient, as the sender covers the fees according to the rates set by each remittance company. However, minimum and maximum amounts, as well as specific service conditions, depend on the operating policies of the international money transfer providers.
This scheme maintains the usual rules of the remittance market, but introduces a relevant variation by eliminating intermediate steps within the national territory for the receipt of funds.
Technical procedure for receiving remittances
To receive a remittance, the customer only needs to share their Visa Qik debit card details. If the Qik option does not appear in the remittance company's system, the user should select the "Visa Debit Dominican Republic" option and enter their card information, allowing the money to be credited directly.
This procedure standardizes the receipt of funds under the logic of international electronic payments and eliminates dependence on physical withdrawal offices.
Institutional statements
“With the launch of this remittance service, Qik Banco Digital continues to expand its ecosystem of digital solutions, facilitating access to international financial services and offering a modern alternative for receiving money from abroad,” said Arturo Grullón, general manager of the neobank.
For his part, Gustavo Turquía, general manager of Visa Dominican Republic, noted that Visa maintains its commitment to the democratization of financial services and the continuous improvement of the efficiency of the payments ecosystem, highlighting that the digitization of remittances reduces operating times for users who depend on these income flows.
Economic and financial impact of the digitization of remittances
Direct crediting of remittances to debit cards strengthens the formalization of these resources within the Dominican financial system. By automatically integrating them into bank accounts, the funds can be more easily used for consumption, savings, electronic payments, and even financial instruments, thus increasing their economic impact.
Furthermore, this model reduces the logistical friction associated with cash withdrawals, such as travel, queues, or time restrictions, thus improving the operational efficiency of recipient households.
Remittances, digital banking and financial inclusion
The implementation of these types of services consolidates the role of neobanks within the national financial system by expanding their capacity to operate as hubs for receiving international capital. It also strengthens financial inclusion processes, especially among segments of the population that depend on remittances as their primary source of income.
In an environment where remittances are one of the pillars of foreign exchange earnings, the modernization of reception channels translates into a structural improvement of the country's financial infrastructure.
