SANTO DOMINGO – Mobile phones, computers, modern vehicles, medical equipment, and even artificial intelligence systems have something in common: they depend on semiconductors to function. It is an industry considered strategic worldwide, and the Dominican Republic is seeking to establish itself as a new investment destination.
According to information provided by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and SMEs (MICM), German businessmen have shown interest in exploring opportunities to produce semiconductors in the country, a possibility that will be addressed in meetings that Minister Víctor "Yayo" Sanz Lovatón will hold soon in Germany.
According to the official, the meeting will focus on companies interested in evaluating the Dominican Republic as part of their supply chains to supply the German market with electronic components manufactured in Dominican territory.
A key industry for the global economy
According to the definition provided by Intel Newsroom, semiconductors are small electronic components that process information and control functions within technological devices. They are found in smartphones, computers, household appliances, vehicles, medical systems, telecommunications networks, and artificial intelligence equipment.
Their importance became evident during the pandemic, when the global shortage of these components caused delays in the production of automobiles, electronic devices and multiple industrial goods in different countries.
Currently, semiconductor manufacturing is mainly concentrated in Asian markets such as Taiwan, China, Singapore, South Korea and Vietnam, considered world leaders in this industry.
Why is Germany looking towards the Dominican Republic?
According to statements made by Sanz Lovatón and disseminated by the MICM, the main consumer markets for semiconductors are seeking to reduce their dependence on distant supply chains and diversify their sources of supply.
The official noted that countries such as Germany, the United States, and other Western economies have shown interest in strengthening trade relations with nations considered allies and geographically close, in order to reduce risks associated with geopolitical conflicts, trade tensions, or logistical disruptions.
In this context, the Dominican Republic seeks to leverage its strategic location, its proximity to North America, the stability of its free trade zones, and existing trade agreements to attract investments linked to advanced technological manufacturing, the entity reported.
The Dominican Bet
The interest in developing this industry is part of a strategy promoted by the Government through Decree 324-24, which declares the promotion, innovation and development of the semiconductor industry in the Dominican Republic to be of high national priority.
According to the MICM, this initiative seeks to accelerate the transformation of the national productive apparatus towards activities with higher added value and more specialized jobs.
Sanz Lovatón highlighted that the composition of Dominican exports has evolved in recent years. He explained that, while textiles previously predominated, currently around 35% of exports are medical devices and about 15% are electronic components, sectors that demand more highly qualified technical personnel and generate better-paying jobs.
The official also recalled that months ago a report was presented on the business environment for the semiconductor and microelectronics industry in the Dominican Republic, which analyzed the regulatory, institutional and human capital conditions that could make the country an attractive destination for this type of investment.
