SANTO DOMINGO.- The Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU) will inaugurate this Wednesday, October 23, the first International Congress of Architecture and Urbanism (CIAU 2024), in which global experts will discuss the latest trends in these professional fields, and will offer participants unique opportunities to understand how architecture can be integrated in a sustainable and innovative way.
The event will run until Friday, October 25, at the university facilities, and will bring together academics, researchers, professionals, and students in an environment of learning and discovery, according to a press release.
“This congress marks a milestone in the history of architecture in our country, as it is the first time that an event of this magnitude has been held in the Dominican Republic,” says Architect Heidi De Moya Simó, director of the School of Architecture and Urbanism of the Faculty of Architecture and Arts of UNPHU, responsible for the organization of CIAU 2024.

During the congress, thought leaders from various countries, such as architect Kai-Uwe Bergmann from the Danish firm BIG Architects; Dr. Juan Herreros from Spain; architect Felipe Assadi from Chile; architect Belén Moneo from the firm Moneo – Brocks; and architect Adrian McGregor from the Australian firm Macgregor & Coxall; along with local experts, will give presentations, participate in panels, and deliver keynote lectures on key topics such as urban and territorial planning, environment and sustainability, and technology applied to design and construction, among others, contributing diverse experiences and approaches to the present and future of architecture and urbanism.
“Our exhibitors not only represent the cutting edge of architectural research and practice, but also share our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” says De Moya Simó, who also highlights that this congress is a unique platform to connect with visionaries, discover new ideas, exchange knowledge, promote innovation, and foster debate around the challenges facing cities and their sustainable development.

Program details
On October 22 and 23, participants will enjoy the “Sunlit Tours,” a series of guided outdoor tours in different areas of the city of Santo Domingo, planned according to the thematic areas of the congress.
The formal opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 23rd at 5:00 pm, followed by a keynote address by Dr. Juan Herreros, from Spain, in the Horacio Álvarez Saviñón Auditorium at UNPHU.
On October 24 and 25, various activities will take place in the auditorium and other rooms of the university, from presentations by national and international professionals to expert panels and keynote lectures.
The closing activity will take place on Friday, October 25th at 7:40 pm in the Horacio Álvarez Saviñón auditorium.
