Construction projects with permits grew 12% in the country compared to 2022, according to the ONE

SANTO DOMINGO.- The number of licensed construction projects in the Dominican private sector last year totaled 9,433, a 12.0% increase compared to 2022. 67.7% were apartments (including tourist accommodations), 13.3% were houses, and 11.7% were a combination of commercial and residential buildings.

The information is contained in the “2023 Yearbook of Economic Statistics” of the National Statistics Office (ONE), which reveals that in 2023 1,401 construction licenses were granted to the private sector, the highest number of which was registered in Santo Domingo followed by the National District, Santiago and La Altagracia.

The document published by the ONE aims to provide updated information on the economic activity of the Dominican Republic for the year 2023 and maintains that last year's edition shows a recovery in the main statistics after the pandemic and the lockdown, as seen from the results of the real sector of the economy.

The report adds that the private sector construction area last year was 7,667,474.6 m2, with an appraised value of RD$110,837 million, representing a 9.1% decrease compared to 2022. More than half of the appraised value of construction corresponded to apartment buildings, with an appraised value of RD$80,304.38 million.

“In 2023, a total of 1,401 building permits were granted to the private sector, of which 63.5% were for apartment buildings and 12.4% for housing construction. 27.8% of the permits granted were for Santo Domingo, 19.6% for the National District, 19.1% for Santiago, and 11.3% for La Altagracia,” the publication notes.

He adds that 53.0% of the licensed constructions were built in Santo Domingo, 16.3% in La Altagracia and 9.3% in Sánchez Ramírez.

The Yearbook also states that the area of ​​licensed private-sector construction totaled 7,667,474.6 m2, with 3,749,424.7 m2 located in Santo Domingo, representing 48.9% of the total. Meanwhile, the area of ​​apartments reached 5,703,040.1 m2, representing 74.4% of the total.

“The appraised value amounts to approximately RD$110,837 million, representing a decrease of 9.1% compared to 2022,” according to the findings of the National Statistics Office.

It includes general private construction activities, as well as specialized building and civil works, including new construction, modifications, extensions and renovations, temporary works, entire homes, office buildings, warehouse premises, service buildings, etc.
