SANTO DOMINGO.-The construction of an emergency cell at the Pedernales landfill and a sanitary landfill for the municipality of that province and surrounding areas is part of the plan that the authorities intend to implement to make the Cabo-Rojo development project a benchmark for tourist destinations, as a model of care for the proper management of its environment and solid waste.
That is why the Pro-Pedernales and Do Sostenible trusts, together with the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP), established a collaboration agreement that includes the closure of the Pedernales and Monte Boutique landfills in the Jaragua National Park with the aim of implementing an integrated waste management process for the Cabo Rojo project, an action that will have a favorable impact on the entire province.
Through the agreement, the trusts committed to working together on the comprehensive management of solid waste within the Cabo Rojo-Pedernales Project and to promote the management of a sanitary landfill for the municipality of the province and its surrounding areas.
The Sustainable Trust committed, in the agreement, to carry out the construction of the Pedernales landfill Emergency Cell, as well as operate it, and collaborate with the closure of the two open-air landfills located in the area, once the Cell is built, as approved by the competent institutions, in accordance with the parameters and requirements established in the current legal regulations.
Do Sostenible will also manage the construction of a sanitary landfill for the municipality of the province of Pedernales and surrounding areas.
The agreement was signed by the general manager of Fiduciaria Reservas, Andrés Vander Horst Álvarez; the executive director of the Do-Sostenible Trust, Armando Paino Henríquez; and by the executive director of the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP), Sigmund Freund.
Freund thanked the representatives for their willingness to support the efforts being made to implement best practices in the Cabo Rojo project and said that the signing is especially significant, since the Do-Sustainable Trust is the first public-private partnership created in the country and its good performance is a sign that these sectors can work together to achieve objectives focused on improving the environment and the health of the population.
The head of the DGAPP stated that he will do everything possible to achieve the closure of the landfills that are causing so much damage to Pedernales, a province that, he said, will begin receiving thousands of cruise ship passengers starting in January.
He added that this agreement marks the beginning of steps to ensure proper solid waste management and the sustainable development of the Enriquillo Region.
For his part, Vander Horst stated that “this agreement further commits us to the execution of a project that will serve as a benchmark for other tourist destinations due to the care and dedication to the proper management of their environment and solid waste.”.
Paino Henríquez emphasized that "this is the first time that a tourist destination is being developed in a planned and studied manner, taking into consideration the environment and sustainability.".
He added that until almost four months ago there was no comprehensive solid waste management system in this province, and noted that this is why the agreement has greater significance "because the works are still being started and there is already a solid waste management plan in place.".

From the signing of this agreement, the Do-Sustainable Trust commits to advising the Pro-Pedernales Trust regarding the proper management of solid waste in the Cabo Rojo Project, as well as supporting the preparation of the solid waste management plan for this project.
Meanwhile, the Pro-Pedernales Trust assumes the commitment to contribute to the environmental education work in Pedernales, regarding the dissemination of messages alluding to the proper management of solid waste among the population.
In addition, Pro-Pedernales will collaborate with the management of solid waste through the implementation of a solid waste management manual in Cabo Rojo.
