The Building Code will be rolled out gradually, reports Mivhed

SANTO DOMINGO- The new Dominican Republic Construction Code (CDCRD), a tool that seeks to transform the way in which works are designed, planned and executed in the country, will be implemented gradually, according to the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (Mivhed).

The entity specified that the implementation of the code will take place in a transition phase that will extend between six and twelve months, allowing professionals, developers and local authorities to familiarize themselves with the new provisions.

The governing body for construction in the country emphasizes that this stage will include education, dissemination and technical assistance programs, under its supervision.

He emphasized that the development of the CDCRD was the result of an open and participatory process, in which he worked alongside key actors in the sector, through technical review and public consultations, ensuring the inclusion of diverse professional perspectives.

"This new code consolidates previously scattered regulations, raising standards of safety, efficiency and quality, and placing citizens at the center of every infrastructure project," he noted.

“In the Dominican Republic, the law is enforced. This Code was created with the intention of being enforced. We will maintain zero tolerance for construction outside the law,” said Carlos Bonilla, the institution's minister.

Among the main innovations of the CDCRD, according to the Mivhed, are:

  • A continuous review scheme, which will allow it to be updated according to technological advances.
  • New technical specifications and structural analysis methodologies.
  • The first seismic zoning map of the Dominican Republic, a key tool for designing buildings that are more resistant to natural phenomena.

Benefits, according to Mivhed:

Clearer calculations and plans

Strengthened inspections

Materialswith verifiable specifications

Transparent path from design to finished project

More security

Lessrisk

Higher quality

Lessuncertainty
