Santo Domingo is the province with the highest number of registered voters, with 678,211 in total: 348,752 women and 329,459 men
SANTO DOMINGO.– The Central Electoral Board (JCE) announced that as of this Friday, August 28, the restriction that limited the issuance of the new ID card to the month of birth has been eliminated.
“Starting this Friday, August 28, all citizens can go to our service centers to renew their document regardless of their birth month; there are no more excuses, no more restrictions,” said Ramón Andrés Jáquez Liranzo, president of the organization.
He recalled that from the beginning it was stipulated that the renewal would be gradual, and that since the process began on April 12 of this year, 37.7% of the electoral roll has been renewed to date. The executive made his statements as the number of registered voters reached 3 million.
The previous ID card expires on April 1st
The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) reminded citizens that the current format of the national identity document will remain valid until April 1st of next year.
“April 1, 2027, will mark a turning point in this process. From that date forward, the old ID card will no longer be accepted, and the new document will be required for all activities that demand its presentation,” he explained.
He noted that citizens without the new document would face civil disqualification starting April 1, 2027, and therefore urged Dominicans not to wait until the last minute to renew their ID.
Three million registered voters
The three millionth identity card was issued to citizen Onaney Rosmel Severino Alcántara, whom the Plenary recognized as a symbol of citizen commitment to Dominican identity, participation and democratic values by exercising her right to citizenship in the process of renewing her identity and electoral card.
Jáquez Liranzo explained that 3,066,520 people have renewed and received their new voter ID cards, representing 35.8% of the 8,569,272 people currently registered to vote. An additional 164,970 people have ID cards available for delivery, bringing the total to 3,231,490 renewals, equivalent to 37.7% of the total voter registry as of this report.
“Today we celebrate 3 million people receiving their ID cards, but we also celebrate 3 million people whose identity has undergone a process designed to verify and protect it. We celebrate the efforts of the staff of the Central Electoral Board who make each stage of this process possible; we celebrate another step toward strengthening the identity and sovereignty of the Dominican Republic,” he said.
He stated that “when we protect a person’s identity, we protect their rights; when we strengthen our registries, we strengthen legal security and the integrity of the electoral roll; and when we guarantee a person, a fingerprint, an identity, we strengthen the certainty upon which our democracy rests.”
He also highlighted that this effort has received international recognition, as the Dominican Republic won the award for best identity document in Latin America 2026, presented during the High Security Printing Latin America Forum held in Guatemala City.
“You don’t just come to the Board; the Board also comes to you. That’s why we’ve taken this process to hard-to-reach places through mobile operations. To date, we have carried out a total of 333 operations nationwide and abroad, and we will continue expanding this effort to bring the service closer to those who face the greatest difficulties in traveling to our educational centers,” he emphasized.
The ceremony was presided over by the full board of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) in the auditorium of its headquarters. In addition to its president, the board included full members Dolores Altagracia Fernández Sánchez, Samir Rafael Chami Isa, Hirayda Marcelle Fernández Guzmán, and Rafael Armando Vallejo Santelises; Secretary General Sonne Beltré; and alternate members Prado López, Cristian Perdomo, Anibelca Rosario, and Tony Tejada. Also present were members of the JCE's governing body, deputy directors, officers in charge, and delegates from various political organizations.
Ages of those with identity cards
The Director of Identification, Américo Rodríguez, presented the identification card registration data. By age group, the highest concentration is among young adults. The 30-39 age group leads with 626,004 registered individuals, followed by the 40-49 age group with 566,628; the 20-29 age group with 549,924; and the 50-59 age group with 516,875. Additionally, 400,188 renewals were recorded for people aged 60-69; 202,627 for those aged 70-79; 133,030 for young people aged 16-19; 55,487 for those aged 80-89; and 7,539 for those aged 90-99. and 228 citizens aged 100 years or older.
Dominicans abroad
Regarding Dominicans registered abroad, 136,961 renewals have been completed. Women lead international participation with 76,593 women served, compared to 60,368 men who have updated their documents.
Distribution of provinces
Santo Domingo is the province with the highest number of registered voters, with 678,211 in total: 348,752 women and 329,459 men. It is followed by the National District, with 334,842 registered voters; Santiago, with 326,188; and San Cristóbal, with 176,857. Other provinces with high numbers of registered voters include La Vega, with 132,531; San Pedro de Macorís, with 108,585; Duarte, with 106,373; and Puerto Plata, with 106,285.
La Altagracia has 93,011 registered voters and La Romana, 89,406. Espaillat has 77,132 registered voters; San Juan, 75,128; and Azua, 73,750. Barahona, with 60,993; Peravia, with 59,563; Monseñor Nouel, with 56,426; and Monte Plata, with 55,821.
