SANTO DOMINGO. – The National Office for Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie)announced yesterday, Thursday, that it has begun a detailed structural evaluation of the building of the former headquarters of the Central University of the East (UCE), located in San Pedro de Macorís, with the purpose of knowing the current conditions of the infrastructure and determining its level of vulnerability.
The evaluation includes a comprehensive technical survey of the building, through which specialists from the institution gather information on the current conditions of its main structural elements and the materials that make them up.
As part of the technical procedures applied during this survey, the specialized team carried out the extraction of concrete cores, samples that will be subjected to the corresponding analyses to determine properties such as the quality and resistance of the material present in the structural elements, as explained by the entity that is in charge of monitoring the state of the country's infrastructure.
The work, according to the organization, is being carried out by the Eastern Delegation, in coordination with the Structures Laboratory, whose professionals are conducting inspections and measurements in different areas of the building to obtain information that will support the structural diagnosis.
Its historical value weighs heavily
Engineer Mariel Bock Ricón, head of the Structures Laboratory at Onesvie, highlighted the importance of conducting a specialized evaluation of a building of this type, both because of its construction conditions and because of the historical and social value it represents.
"This is a century-old building that requires specialized attention. This assessment will allow us to understand its actual condition and obtain reliable technical information to establish the corresponding recommendations," said Bock Ricón.
The specialist explained that core sampling is one of the tools used during the evaluation process, because it allows obtaining concrete samples directly from the structure and subjecting them to tests that provide relevant information for the diagnosis.
He also thanked the executives of the Universidad Central del Este for promoting this technical process and noted that having an accurate diagnosis will allow for properly guiding decisions related to the conservation of the property.

Onesvie said that once the fieldwork is completed and the laboratory analyses are finished, they will proceed to prepare a technical report with the findings and recommendations derived from the evaluation, a document that will serve as a basis for assessing the appropriate actions according to the conditions identified in the structure.
It concludes that the infrastructure is part of the entity's commitment to contribute, through the generation of specialized technical information, to the reduction of the vulnerability of buildings and the protection of lives, while also seeking the preservation of the built heritage of the Dominican Republic.
