In addition to the hotel offering, the project incorporates a significant real estate component, with apartments and plots of land intended for new developments
SANTO DOMINGO. The Punta Bergantín project , near Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata, is progressing as one of the main bets to relaunch tourism on the north coast, with an area of 9.6 million square meters , four hotels of international brands and a significant real estate component.
President Luis Abinader explained that the project seeks to recover the prominence that Puerto Plata had in the beginnings of Dominican tourism, through a combination of hotel investment, residential development and new spaces for innovation.
Four hotels and new rooms
The project includes four hotels of international brands, backed by operators with marketing capacity in the North American market.
The CEO of Banreservas, Leonardo Aguilera, announced that the first hotel, the Meliá, with 450 rooms, has already had its groundbreaking ceremony. The second hotel, the Westin, also with 450 rooms, is scheduled to begin construction in early December, while the groundbreaking ceremony for the Dreams, with 500 rooms, is projected for March 2027.
Aguilera emphasized that the arrival of these brands will attract new markets and help reposition Puerto Plata as an international tourist destination.
Punta Bergantín is also committed to real estate development
In addition to the hotel offering, the project incorporates a significant real estate component, with apartments and plots of land intended for new developments.
Aguilera noted that a residential project spearheaded by Santiago businessmen includes 180 apartments, 120 of which have already been sold. In addition, 263 lots have been sold within Punta Bergantín.
The executive also reported that, following a promotional activity carried out with businessmen from Santiago a few weeks ago, sales of more than US$40 million, reflecting the interest of the private sector in investing in the new hub.
A project with a regional vision
Abinader explained that Punta Bergantín emerged as an initiative to recover the tourist dynamism of Puerto Plata and extend it again along the north coast.
The project is being developed through a partnership between the State and the private sector, with Banreservas as the financial and strategic arm, while the land belongs to the Central Bank.
The initiative also includes an international innovation center, in addition to the hotel and real estate components.
Aguilera highlighted that Punta Bergantín went from being an initiative conceived in 2020 to becoming a project with investments, sales and works underway.
The president highlighted that, like Cabo Rojo, Punta Bergantín represents a public-private partnership in which the State not only promotes a tourism development policy, but also seeks to generate economic returns.
Aguilera argued that Banreservas' participation in the project constitutes a business investment and not a financial sacrifice for the State.
According to the executive, Punta Bergantín seeks to become the “New North”, with the capacity to attract hotel, residential and business investment, generate jobs and contribute to the recovery of Puerto Plata as one of the country's main tourist destinations.
