SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominicans and descendants of the country residing abroad can participate in the fifth edition of the short film contest “Huellas de mi Quisqueya” (Footprints of my Quisqueya), which opened its call for entries with the objective of collecting, through cinema, stories linked to the identity and experiences of the diaspora.
The contest, organized by the Institute of Dominicans Abroad (Index), will accept registrations until November 9 , 2026, at 6:00 p.m., Dominican Republic time.
The competition is aimed at people aged 18 or over, of Dominican nationality or descendants, who have at least one year of residence outside the country and have a valid legal immigration status in their place of residence.
Entries may be submitted in the Amateur and Filmmakers categories, in accordance with the rules established for the competition.
In its four previous editions, the initiative has brought together more than 300 participants from 35 countries, according to data provided during the presentation of the new call.
Short films will tell stories of the diaspora
The competition proposes that participants address, from their own experiences, topics related to customs, memory, identity and the links they maintain with the Dominican Republic from the countries where they live.
The call seeks to show how Dominicans living abroad maintain and reinterpret their roots through their everyday experiences.

How long has it existed?
This is an initiative of the Institute of Dominicans Abroad (INDEX), created with the purpose of making visible the stories and experiences of Dominicans who reside outside the national territory.
In that same order, this project continues, which seeks to highlight the cultural, family and emotional ties that Dominicans maintain with the Dominican Republic, regardless of the country where they are located.
The Vice Minister for Dominican Communities Abroad and Executive Director of Index, Ambassador Celinés Toribio, also highlighted the growth of the initiative, which in its previous editions has brought together more than 300 participants from 35 countries, and urged Dominicans residing abroad to participate.
What is the purpose of this competition?
The contest aims to promote, recognize and strengthen Dominican identity abroad, using audiovisual media as a tool to tell and preserve the experiences of the diaspora.
Through their productions, participants can present stories that reflect how they preserve their roots, traditions, and cultural values while developing their lives outside the Dominican Republic.
What is this contest looking for?
This contest seeks to highlight the experiences of Dominicans living abroad, emphasizing their stories, their identity, their roots, and the ties they maintain with the Dominican Republic.
It also seeks to foster the creativity and audiovisual talent of the Dominican diaspora, using film and audiovisual resources as a means to preserve and share their experiences, traditions, and cultural values.
This contest seeks to provide a space for Dominicans and their descendants to share testimonies and stories related to their connection with their country of origin.
The proposals can address aspects such as family, traditions, music, gastronomy, memories and Dominican customs, elements that contribute to preserving cultural identity and maintaining the link with the Dominican Republic beyond its borders.
In this sense, the initiative seeks to highlight how Dominican roots, culture and identity remain present in the lives of those who are part of the diaspora, even when they are geographically distant from the country.
