President Luis Abinader reported Friday night that 31 bridges have suffered damage in the country following Hurricane Fiona's passage through national territory.
LA VEGA.– The passage over the Sabaneta bridge that crosses the Camú River in the Jeremías community of this province is closed from this moment "as a preventive measure", the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) reported yesterday.
Deligne Ascención, the minister of that department, explained that the measure was taken because one of the elements that had been placed to reinforce the structure, after the passage of Hurricane Fiona, suffered a climb, "so it is imperative to prevent possible situations that could cause human losses.".
This is the second bridge to be taken out of service in La Vega. The first was the Pontón Bridge, which has been closed for two months due to its advanced state of disrepair and finally collapsed after the heavy rains caused by Hurricane Fiona.
In a press release, the official stated that construction work on the new bridge continues uninterrupted and at an accelerated pace.
He noted that in the meantime, Public Works will enable, as soon as the river level allows, the temporary passage over the existing bridge structure.
He stated that the entire metal structure of the new bridge under construction is already finished and, along with other structural elements that will be placed in the middle of the riverbed, are only waiting for the minimum favorable conditions to be installed.
He emphasized that this bridge dates back to 1935 and should have been replaced 30 years ago. He added that, due to its significant deterioration and lack of maintenance for decades, it requires urgent replacement, "for which the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) is working tirelessly.".
