PUNTA CANA.– The Bávaro-Punta Cana tourist coast has a vacancy of 5,000 employees, who were laid off or dismissed at the beginning of the pandemic and who have not returned to their jobs for various reasons, while hotel occupancy continues to grow at this time of year.
This was confirmed by the president of the Association of Hotels and Tourist Projects of the East (Asodeste), Ernesto Veloz, who explained that many of the employees who left the hotels have not returned, some having dedicated themselves to other jobs or commercial activities.
He stated that, due to this situation, there are still positions to be filled in various categories in the area, which has strongly resumed occupancy and reservations with figures that are on par with the previous pandemic season.
She gave the example of an employee who worked at a tourist stand and who, after setting up a fried chicken stand in Higüey, has sales of 4,000 pesos a day, bought her husband a motor and refused to return to her job before the pandemic.
Along those lines, there are other employees who have refused to return because, with some resources or severance pay, they started a business, others returned to their communities, agriculture, and other areas that guarantee them economic stability.
Veloz stated that the current season has been very strong, so it is necessary to attract the human resources needed by the tourism industry, which is showing exceptional growth and repositioning.
He stated that the way tourism is recovering is thanks to the policies and actions implemented by President Luis Abinader from the tourism sector and the government, and on the other hand, the responses of the hotel sector, whose business owners have contributed their share and work to recover quickly and safely or with minimal risk.
The president of the hoteliers of the East indicated that his projections of reaching 97% of the hotel facilities open in the area and having more than 80% occupancy than the average for this season, which has more than 90,000 employees and more than 50,000 rooms, bode well for the prospects, if nothing changes, as a project of the pandemic.
