January-June 2022 continued the trend of being the period with the highest number of projects approved by the Government since 2017, with 49.6% of the total approved in June alone. The provinces with the most approved projects are Santiago and the National District, with 24 projects each. According to data published by the General Directorate of Public Investment (DGIP) of the Ministry of Economy, the total cost of the projects approved in June was 16,442.3 million pesos, for a cumulative total of 111,325 million pesos, the highest in the last five years.
Trade restrictions worsen the worst food crisis in a decade
The worst global food crisis in a decade was one of the main topics discussed at the twelfth ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization ( WTO) last month, according to an article published on the World Bank blog by Mari Elka Pangestu and Axel Van Trotsenburg. The Ministry of Public Works is proposing the construction of a new four-lane bridge to connect the Los Mina and Sabana Perdida sectors, given the inadequacy of the current bridge for the volume of traffic in the area, as well as another bridge parallel to the Jacinto Peynado or Villa Mella bridge. Minister Deligne Ascención revealed that the design phase is underway to replace the General Gregorio Luperón or La Barquita bridge, built during Joaquín Balaguer's administration in 1978 to handle a smaller volume of traffic than currently exists.
The Dominican Republic is among the six countries with the best regulations and institutions for public-private partnerships
The seventh edition of the Infrascope report shows that the Dominican Republic has made significant progress in public-private partnerships (PPPs) and is well-positioned compared to the regional average, ranking among the six Latin American and Caribbean countries with the best PPP regulation and institutional framework, ahead of Costa Rica, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Brazil, Jamaica, and others. The publication, which assesses the region's capacity to mobilize private investment in infrastructure through PPPs, indicates that the Dominican Republic ranks 10th out of 26 countries in the overall score across the indicators evaluated in this study.
Population turns to Protecom with 9,207 complaints about rate increase
Electricity service is essential for economic and social development; however, to what extent is this being fulfilled in the Dominican Republic, where the foundations that led to the signing of the Electricity Pact have been eroded? In the first quarter of this year alone (April-June), Protecom, a department established by the Superintendency of Electricity (SIE) in accordance with the General Electricity Law, registered more than 9,207 complaints from users regarding overbilling and other issues, in addition to the power outages caused by the Electricity Distribution Companies (EDEs) that affect the population despite there being no problems with electricity generation.
Jean Alain bought land with money from the Attorney General's Office
Former Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez used public funds to construct a perimeter fence on a property he owns, which he acquired in his last transaction with Attorney General's Office money. The property is located on the Circunvalación Avenue in Santo Domingo, near the Villa Mella-Yamasá intersection. This is stated in the indictment filed by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption (PEPCA) against the former Attorney General and the other defendants in the Medusa corruption case. The case file is currently with Judge Amauris Martínez of the Third Court of Instruction of the National District for the preliminary hearing.
