LA VEGA.– The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) began the complete demolition this Tuesday of the part of the bridge structure that collapsed yesterday in the Pontón section, in La Vega, after the constant rains, following the passage of Hurricane Fiona in the country.
The section of the bridge that collapsed had not been in operation for two months, according to the Deputy Minister of Supervision and Inspection of the MOPC, Roberto Herrera, who assured that the reconstruction work on the bridge will be completed in about three months.
He said that the teams began demolishing the entire structural part of the bridge.
Meanwhile, the regional director of Public Works, Alexis Sosa, stated that thanks to the measures that had been previously taken, no human losses occurred.
Meanwhile, Junior Taveras, regional director for Cibao-sur, explained that they will work at full speed to complete the work as soon as possible, given the importance of the Duarte highway as a road network.
Given this situation, the mayor here, Kelvin Cruz, asked President Luis Abinader to include this city in the declared State of Emergency, because in addition to this bridge, the ford on the road that goes from this city to Jarabacoa is also facing problems.
Kelvin Cruz said that although the damage in that province is not extensive, the declaration of emergency could facilitate the resources for the immediate repair of the Bridge.
