SANTO DOMINGO.– Nearly 150 volunteers from Banco Popular Dominicano and Fundación Popular participated in a reforestation day in the community of Jaiquí Picado, in La Cuesta, where 4,000 trees were planted in coordination with Plan Sierra.
The activity corresponded to the second day of reforestation carried out by the financial organization during this year and was focused on strengthening the forest cover of the area and contributing to the preservation of important water sources in the Northern region.
Environmental impact
According to data provided by Banco Popular, the planted trees will allow the expansion of forest cover by about 97.2 tareas, favoring the preservation of the Ámina river sub-basin and the Sui micro-basin.
The organization explained that, once they reach adulthood, the trees could capture more than 1,280 tons of carbon dioxide per year, in addition to contributing to soil retention and water storage.
During the day, 15 timber and protection species were planted, including native mahogany, cedar, oak, cabirma, saman and cigua prieta.
With this initiative, the Popular Volunteering claims to have planted over 1.3 million plants since the beginning of its reforestation program in 2000.
Alliance with Plan Sierra
Jorge Jana, Vice President of the Northern Zone Business Area of the banking institution, pointed out that these types of events are part of the environmental and sustainability actions developed by the organization.
Meanwhile, the executive vice president of Plan Sierra, Inmaculada Adames, highlighted the support provided by that financial institution to the reforestation initiatives promoted in the Sierra.
The environmental organization also thanked the owner, Modesto Infante, for providing the land used during the planting day.
Volunteer training
Prior to the start of the activity, the volunteers participated in a technical talk given by William Guzmán, director of Ecological and Social Planning of Plan Sierra, on responsible reforestation practices and the environmental impact of this type of initiative.
During the planting, the head of the Forestry Macrounit, Loranny Santos, guided the participants on the management of the land and the characteristics of the planted species.
