The trends that will mark world architecture in 2024 will be focused on sustainability and outdoor spaces, according to the architecture studio Fenwick Iribarren, Madrid, Spain.
“We will see an increase in the number of outdoor terraces, where the building's boundaries blur and the inside-outside lines become indistinct. Meetings and office work will take place outdoors or in more open, airy environments, very different from the traditional workspace,” he commented.
In this context, the study added that these preferences will shape the urban landscape of the coming years. Furthermore, it emphasized the importance of using modular architectural systems.
“Some projects will be conceived as temporary buildings and will later be dismantled and moved to another location. It will be a modular, simple, and easily executable design.”.
The firm explained that these properties must be adapted to the climatic conditions, the environment and the specific needs of the location.
Trends will focus on green areas
Another trend in 2024 will be sustainable facades, where the insertion of green areas into the building's elevation will predominate.
“Various modules or rings, like trays, will serve as a base or support for different plant species and green areas, as if it were a vertical garden,” he added
There will also be double facadeswith protection, which allow for greater sound insulation. These will constantly decontaminate the surrounding area, thanks to the chemical processes that occur naturally on their surface.
Finally, priority is given to the well-being of communities increasingly exposed to climate change, so islands will be created that reach a lower temperature than the surrounding environment in summer, and that will avoid excessive cold in winter through the use of vegetation species suitable to the environment.
“Here, the focus is on efficiency in irrigation systems and electricity consumption. Ultimately, it's about adapting the architecture to the existing landscape when building interventions are necessary.”.
