SANTO DOMINGO.– The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) and the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic (Minerd) signed a collaboration agreement that will allow high school students to perform up to 30 hours of social work in road safety education through their participation in the “Guardians of the Transit” volunteer program, an initiative that will begin to be implemented gradually starting next school year.
The initiative is part of a national strategy aimed at strengthening civic education from the classroom and promoting a culture of respect, prevention and responsibility on the roads, integrating road safety education programs and student volunteering in public and private educational centers in the country.
Intrant's executive director, Milton Morrison, explained that the agreement represents an important step in transforming road safety education into a permanent training tool for new generations and added that the goal is for this learning to become a requirement within the high school graduation process in the country.
“We are convinced that road safety education is the most powerful tool for saving lives. We want to train young people to be aware, responsible, and capable of becoming multipliers of good practices in their communities,” Morrison said.
As part of the program, students will be able to participate in road safety orientation days, awareness campaigns, identification of risks on the roads and community activities related to road safety, accumulating valid hours of social work within their training process.
It includes training in civic coexistence
The initiative will also allow young people to receive training in civic responsibility and safe mobility, linking learning with practical activities aimed at strengthening road safety awareness from an early age. In fact, students who participated in the pilot program have already received their learner's permits as part of the educational process.
The agreement also includes training programs for teachers and educational staff, the development of teaching materials, and the implementation of protocols to integrate the "Traffic Guardians" student volunteer program into schools. Likewise, both institutions committed to reaching more than 300,000 students with road safety education programs by 2028 through training sessions, awareness campaigns, and activities coordinated between the Ministry of Education (Minerd) and the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant).
