SANTO DOMINGO.-The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) reported that as of 4:00 PM yesterday, Friday, it reopened vehicular traffic on the Juan Pablo II or Northeast Highway, which had been suspended yesterday, Thursday, in the Chirino-Mella highway overpass section, because the accumulation of water that was preventing traffic has begun to recede.
According to a statement issued by the MOPC Press Office, a gauge was placed in the flooded section of the road to monitor the accumulated water level, and it was determined that the water level has dropped by about 45 centimeters. Therefore, taking precautionary measures, vehicles using that road can be allowed to pass.
“We have determined that from this morning until this time (4:00 pm) the water accumulated on the roadway is 45 cm less than it was yesterday, so we are announcing the opening to vehicular traffic, while we continue to monitor the behavior of the flooding,” said engineer César Ramírez, who is in charge of the work being carried out in the affected area.
Public Works said that work continues to bring the water levels down to optimal levels so that vehicles can travel on the road without any difficulties
It is recalled that the MOPC had closed the passage on the aforementioned road because, in the community of Chirino, in the province of Monte Plata, the Marucho and Caño Nuevo streams, which are tributaries of the Ozama River, as well as the Yabacao, whose channels received large amounts of rain from the storm Franklin caused them to overflow and occupy the roadway.
