The UASD tunnel will be closed this Thursday so Public Works can evaluate a crack

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) will suspend vehicular traffic through the tunnel that connects Ortega y Gasset Avenue with the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) today, Thursday, February 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., due to structural difficulties that have been present since last Tuesday.

The agency explained that the measure will be implemented so that technicians from this institution can conduct detailed studies of the crack that occurred in one of the roof slabs and caused a leak of wastewater.

According to a statement from the MOPC, an unexpected crack has appeared on this high-speed road, allowing the drainage system at the top of the tunnel to leak, which will be fully assessed.

After ruling out any structural issues in the tunnel, the institution apologizes to drivers who use this viaduct daily for any inconvenience the measure may cause.

Since Tuesday

The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) reported on Tuesday afternoon that it closed the tunnel due to falling concrete particles from the ceiling.

Through his Twitter account, the head of the agency, Deligne Ascención, explained that the particles falling from the infrastructure are from the slab placed on the roof of the road system.

"We inform the public that the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), together with the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation (Digesett), has ordered the closure of the tunnel connecting Ortega y Gasset Avenue with the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), due to falling concrete particles from the roof slab. We will keep the public duly informed," the minister stated via social media.

However, after determining that it did not pose a danger to drivers, the tunnel was reopened a few hours later.
