Inflationin the Dominican Republic over the last 12 months stands at 9.05%, above the target range
The Central Bank of the Dominican Republic reported yesterday that year-on-year inflation, calculated over the last 12 months from March 2021 to March 2022, reached 9.05%, 2.3 times higher than the 4.0% midpoint of the target range. “It is worth noting that the year-on-year result includes the 2.80% inflation rate for the first three months of 2022,” the bank stated in its report.
US inflation rose 8.5% annually, the biggest increase in 40 years
The surge in inflation in the United States over the past 12 months has been the highest in 40 years. Soaring prices for food, gasoline, and housing, among other things, are squeezing consumers and wiping out the wage increases many people have received. The Labor Department said Tuesday that its Consumer Price Index rose 8.5% in March compared to the previous year, the highest annual increase since December 1981. The price hikes are attributed to supply chain disruptions, high demand, and disruptions to global food and energy markets exacerbated by Russia's war in Ukraine.
Public Works will provisionally open the overpass at the Andrés Boca Chica interchange
The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) announced that the overpass at the Andrés-Boca Chica interchange, on the Las Américas highway and still under construction, will be opened to vehicular traffic provisionally from 6:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, until 6:00 a.m. next Monday.
Financing for tourism reached RD$85,087 million
Between 2019 and 2021, Dominican bank financing to the tourism sector saw a cumulative growth of 48.9%, reaching a balance of RD$85.087 billion at the end of that period, reported the Dominican Republic's Association of Multiple Banks (ABA). The ABA explained that banks increased loans to the tourism sector by RD$27.934 billion during those three years. It noted that, compared to 2020, bank credit to the tourism sector increased by RD$14.644 billion during 2021, showing a growth of 20.8%.
More than 3.8 million passengers arrive by air in the Dominican Republic
Passenger traffic through the country's airports in the first quarter of this year reached 3,812,010 passengers transported on 29,781 scheduled flights to and from the Dominican Republic, according to the Statistical Report of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC). In January, 1,287,951 passengers traveled on 10,470 flights, making it the second-best month for air passenger traffic since March 2020 (after December 2021). In February, 1,177,647 passengers traveled on 9,032 flights, tripling the number for the same month in 2021. The data in the March report shows that 1,346,412 passengers were transported on 10,285 flights, making it the third-best March in the country's history in terms of passenger traffic, after March 2019 and 2018.
Conatra is considering increasing fares for intercity routes
The president of the National Confederation of Transport Organizations (Conatra), Antonio Marte, reported yesterday, Tuesday, that they are analyzing applying an adjustment (increase) to the fares of the intercity route, because they "cannot withstand" the high prices of fuels.

Police identify person of interest in NYC subway attack
The New York Police Department last night identified Frank James, a 62-year-old man, as a "person of interest" in the subway attack. Authorities are searching for him "with all available resources," though it has not yet been established whether he is the perpetrator. Detective Chief James Essig explained that the attacker threw two smoke bombs into the second car of the N line train between 59th and 33rd Streets in southwest Brooklyn, then fired at least 33 shots with a 9mm Glock handgun, wounding 10 people.
