The Santo Domingo Metro has transported 100 million passengers this year, reports OPRET

Passenger Ermitania Encarnación Montero won a year of travel for being the user who reached 100 million.

SANTO DOMINGO.-The Office for the Reorganization of Transportation (OPRET) reported that the Santo Domingo Metro surpassed 100 million passengers transported in a year on Monday, December 11, which the entity establishes as a new record "that shows the confidence of Dominicans in this transportation system."

In a press release, Opret explained that user Ermitania Encarnación Montero, a resident of the Los Girasoles sector in Santo Domingo, was identified as the 100 millionth passenger transported by the Santo Domingo Metro in 2023.

In awarding the user with a year of free travel on this means of transport, the executive director of OPRET, Rafael Santos Pérez, highlighted that this goal achieved is not just a number but a demonstration of the effectiveness of this means of transport, which is projected to close 2023 with 108 million people transported.

“This moment is not just a number; it is a testament to the efficiency and trust that the Dominican people have placed in this mass transit system. Every day, thousands of Dominicans choose this service to travel, trusting in our ability to offer safe, fast, and efficient transportation,” the executive emphasized.

He added that the accessibility and efficiency of public transportation are fundamental to the country's economic growth and thanked President Luis Abinader for the support provided to the development of the transportation sector.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank President Abinader’s government for its constant support and its vision of a better future for all Dominicans. His leadership has been fundamental in achieving significant progress in many areas, including ours,” Santos Pérez stated.

The institution also highlighted that, year after year, the Santo Domingo Metro exceeds the number of passengers transported, which underscores its consolidation as the preferred means of transport for citizens in their daily lives.

It is worth noting that OPRET is working diligently on the execution of three important projects that will continue to boost this important sector: the extension of Line 2C towards Los Alcarrizos; the expansion of Line 1; and in the coming weeks, work will begin on the extension of Line 1 towards Punta de Villa Mella.
