The loan portfolio to SMEs grew 9% in the last year

Financing for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) reached RD$576,837 million in April 2026. This portfolio represents 23.7% of the outstanding balance of the financial system

SANTO DOMINGO.- Credit from Dominican banks directed to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) experienced a year-on-year growth of 9.1%, according to data from the report Financing to Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, published by the Superintendency of Banks (SB) on its website.

The document presented by the SBdetails that the portfolio amounted to RD$576,837 million in April 2026, and is mainly destined for the sectors of commerce, construction, real estate activities, tourism, electricity supply, industry and manufacturing.

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) remain key players in the credit dynamics of the national financial system, accounting for 23.7% of the outstanding balance. Their influence is even more pronounced in the private commercial loan portfolio, where they represent 44.2% of the outstanding balance and account for 77% of total commercial loans to the private sector during the same period.

The three main financial entities with the largest share of the loan portfolio to MSMEs are Banco Popular, Banco de Reservas and Banco BHD, with a combined balance of RD$405,085 million as of April 2026, equivalent to 70.2% of the portfolio allocated to these companies.

Regarding the share of foreign currency in the portfolios of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), it represents 27.1%, a slight year-on-year decrease of 0.4%, in line with the decisions adopted by the Monetary Board. The total balance reached US$2,641 million (RD$156,554 million), concentrated mainly in sectors such as electricity supply, tourism, transportation, and storage.
