The 2026 World Cup has kicked off: yesterday's results and the matches being played this Friday

SANTO DOMINGO.- The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues this Friday with a new day of matches, after an exciting start that saw victories for Mexico and South Korea at the beginning of the tournament.

In the opening match, the Mexican national team took advantage of playing at home, defeating South Africa 2-0 to earn their first three points in Group A and get their World Cup campaign off to a winning start. Later, South Korea came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in Guadalajara, completing the first round of group stage matches.

The action continues this Friday with two new group stage matches. Canada will make its debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the United States will begin its campaign against Paraguay in one of the most anticipated matches of the day.

A new format

With the new format of 48 teams and 104 matches, the 2026 World Cup promises an intense daily schedule during the group stage, where every point can be decisive in the fight to advance to the knockout round.

In the Dominican Republic, fans can follow the World Cup through the official coverage of CDN Deportes and Pio Deportes, which announced the broadcast of the tournament for the country. Additionally, the matches will also be available through international channels with television rights and their respective digital platforms.

On Friday, Canada will face Bosnia and Herzegovina at 3:00 p.m. (local time), while the United States will face Paraguay at 9:00 p.m.

Opening Show

The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially opened with a colorful ceremony at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, where music and culture took center stage in a spectacle that paid tribute to Mexican roots and the diversity of the continent.

The event brought together artists such as Shakira, Burna Boy, Maná, J Balvin, Belinda, Los Ángeles Azules, Danny Ocean, Lila Downs, and Alejandro Fernández, culminating in a performance of "Dai Dai," the tournament's official song. The celebration marked the start of a historic World Cup, the first with 48 teams and co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
