Dominican Republic closes its best Central American Games

SANTO DOMINGO – The Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games have come to a close, leaving a historic performance for the Dominican Republic. As host country, the nation not only welcomed the competition back after a 40-year hiatus, but also finished the edition with its largest medal haul ever.

The Dominican delegation finished with 150 medals: 46 gold, 37 silver, and 67 bronze. This surpassed the previous record of 133 medals, achieved in Mayagüez in 2010, and also set a new national record for gold medals, exceeding the 35 obtained in San Salvador in 2002.

It is, therefore, the best Dominican participation in history if measured by the number of medals and titles won.

The result is even more significant considering that Cuba did participate in Santo Domingo 2026, unlike in San Salvador 2002 or Mayagüez 2010, two of the editions that had marked the Dominican Republic's main precedents. In a more comprehensive competitive environment, the Dominican Republic managed to take its own records to a new level.

Athletics with the best harvests

The distribution of medals also shows that the outcome did not depend on a single sport. Athletics was the discipline that contributed the most medals, with 23, 13 of them gold. Weightlifting added 18; water skiing and judo contributed 12 each; karate won 11, including five golds; and boxing won eight medals, seven of them gold.

But there is another way to measure sporting performance: the final position in the medal count. In that respect, Santo Domingo 2026 did not surpass the Dominican Republic's best historical result.

That record belongs to San Salvador 2002, when the country finished in fourth placewith 132 medals, including 35 gold. Since then, the Dominican Republic had finished fifth in several editions and again in Santo Domingo.

Advances in Dominican sport

However, the comparison also shows how far Dominican sport has come. In 2002, fourth place was achieved with 132 medals; in 2026, fifth place came with 150 medals and 46 golds, the highest figures ever achieved by the country in the history of the Games.

The final medal count was topped by Mexico, with 407 medals and 167 golds. Colombia finished second, Cuba third, Venezuela fourth, and the Dominican Republic fifth.

The ranking, then, doesn't tell the whole story of Santo Domingo 2026. The country didn't achieve its best historical ranking, but it did achieve something it had never achieved before: producing more medals and more champions than in any other edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games.

And perhaps that's the true meaning of these Games for the Dominican Republic. The goal is no longer to prove that the country can compete. That's already been proven. Now there's a new benchmark: 150 medals and 46 golds.

The best historical ranking

San Salvador 2002 holds the historical record. Mayagüez 2010 remains the previous medal record. But Santo Domingo 2026 sets new Dominican records in the two categories that most directly reflect a delegation's performance: number of medals and number of champions.

The Games ended with Mexico at the top of the medal table, but for the Dominican Republic the conclusion is equally clear: the national sport has just reached its highest point in medal production.

The next challenge will be to turn that new record into the starting point for further progress.
