The Sazae eco-friendly wooden sauna is built in the center of the Sana Mane glamping site , near the small inlet of Naoshima, Japan.
The biggest challenge was the timber framing, created by stacking 150 layers of 28mm thick plywood processed using CNC technology. The solid wood sauna has an average wall thickness of 450mm to ensure optimal thermal insulation and heat retention.
The exterior features countless folds like a seashell, casting a striking shadow on the surface. Inside, the folds gently mold to the body, providing a comfortable seating experience. Only the oculus allows light to filter through, creating a meditative atmosphere.
Although this spiral-folded geometry was complex and used 1,500 plywood sheets, the shape design and the sheets were controlled using 3D CAD and programming.
Unlike a typical sauna, despite the high ceiling, the temperature and humidity are maintained at an optimal level through the use of environmental simulations and the design of a forced ventilation airflow.
