On October 5, 2022, Samaná Bayport, the company developing the
Samaná cruise terminal, sponsored the cleaning of more than 200 meters of the banks of the
Sánchez River, an initiative carried out in conjunction with the Ministry of the Environment.
The cleanup day was carried out by 60 volunteers, mainly women
and men from Samaná who have a vocation to improve the state of the
local flora and fauna, which was being affected by the pollution of the place, including mangroves
, native crabs, shrimp and coastal birds, to mention a few.
During the day, approximately 1,500 kilos of garbage accumulated on the
riverbank were collected, causing pollution of the area, the proliferation of mosquitoes, and the
spread of diseases that affected the daily lives of the surrounding communities such as
the La Plazoleta and Punto Botado neighborhoods and the Lower Yuna Mangrove National Park
.
Federico Schad, president of the Samaná Bayport tourism company, said they were
grateful for the support received from the environmental authorities who
joined in this cleanup effort.
“We are aware of our commitment to the care and preservation of local flora and fauna, but there is still much to be done, so we invite more people to join the upcoming clean-up activities,” he explained.
Samaná Bayport is a tourism development project with 100% Dominican capital, which seeks to promote economic and social development through cruise tourism and private navigation in Samaná Bay.
