Renewable energy vs myths

The reduction in costs for photovoltaic systems and the implementation of the net metering program opened the door for electricity grid users to participate in generation by installing solar panels in their homes, businesses and shops.

SANTO DOMINGO- Within the framework of the Energy Transition Project, public and private entities developed a massive campaign with the objective of promoting the use of renewable energies and debunking the main myths about them.

Seven animated videos were produced for educational purposes, to inform the Dominican population about the reality behind this issue and prevent myths from continuing to hinder its growth. The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) participated in the campaign, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development (MEPyD), the National Energy Commission (CNE), and the Associations for the Promotion of Renewable Energies (Asofer) and of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Companies (Aseefeer).

The country has 15 wind and solar power projects, as well as a biomass plant. These projects account for approximately 9% of electricity generation, representing 708 megawatts of installed capacity.

The growth of renewable energy has not come solely from the installation of these large-scale projects. The reduction in costs for photovoltaic systems and the implementation of net metering programs have opened the door for electricity grid users to participate in generation by installing solar panels in their homes, businesses, and shops.

As a result, to date more than 8,000 users have acquired these systems, which now total 200 megawatts of photovoltaic solar capacity installed in the distribution networks.
There is still a long way to go for renewables, which must supply 25% of energy demand by 2030.
