SANTO DOMINGO.- By the end of this month or the beginning of February, the Ministry of Public Works expects to have completed the new east-west and west-east end lanes of the Kilometer 9 cloverleaf that connects the National District with the Duarte Highway, while at the same time proceeding to demolish the central part with which it will complete the expansion from 6 to 14 lanes of that old bridge.
The project for the "Remodeling and Refurbishment of the Entrance to the Capital City at Kilometer 9 of the Duarte Highway" was planned for this month and is progressing at full capacity.
The delay in the infrastructure was due to the expropriation of land typical of that type of work.
“In order to break up the center and thus widen the lanes at the bottom of the underpass, the extreme lanes on the south and north sides must be finished, which are practically complete,” according to Roberto Herrera, Vice Minister of Supervision and Inspection of the Ministry of Public Works.
The project involves an investment of 1.5 billion pesos, according to Herrera, who stated that it is part of the modernization of the Juan Pablo Duarte highway.
120,000 vehicles travel this route daily, creating a bottleneck at the site. Regarding the location of the tanker trucks that supply water to the Santo Domingo Water and Sewerage Corporation, he stated that relocating them is the responsibility of that entity.
Currently, OP's contractor brigades are working on widening the road, sidewalks, and curbs along the Luperón section, as well as on the bridge's road surface at the top, in the islands, and in green areas.
