SANTO DOMINGO.– As part of the reconstruction process being carried out by the municipality of Miches, Seibo province, after the destruction left by Hurricane Fiona, a pilot plan of 50 ecological homes will be launched, to be built through the General Directorate of Strategic and Special Projects of the Presidency (Propeep).
Mayor Leo Zorrilla announced that Colombian experts working with prefabricated house models are expected to arrive this week for the Pradera Central sector. The mayor stated that the goal is to "relocate the people living along the entire east-west bank of the Soco and Seibo rivers.".
The Miches City Hall also expects to complete this week the reconstruction of more than 200 homes that were affected by Hurricane Fiona in that area, Mayor Luz María Mercedes declared yesterday, Monday.
During a visit to Diario Libre, along with Leo Zorrilla and Luis Alberto Moronta, mayors of El Seibo and the Pedro Sánchez municipal district, respectively, the municipal authorities explained the progress made in rebuilding their communities after the devastation of the phenomenon.
The mayor stated that 425 homes have been repaired to date. Regarding the more than 80 houses that were completely destroyed by Hurricane Fiona, municipal officials indicated that the reconstruction process will be different and will take longer, as they plan to use materials other than zinc.
“What we have been doing is working responsibly with the materials received (from the central government),” Moronta reported. In that regard, Mercedes maintained that local authorities and the government have decided not to rebuild those houses with zinc roofing.
“What the government wants is for us to build houses in better condition,” the mayor stated. A survey is planned to determine the time and cost involved in constructing these homes. The affected families are currently staying with relatives.
More than 90% of agricultural production devastated
Luis Alberto Moronta reported that in the municipal district of Pedro Sánchez it was determined that 93% of agricultural production was almost completely devastated by the phenomenon.
He added that the affected crops include cacao, bananas, and passion fruit. The mayor stated that the producers are receiving assistance from the central government. The mayors agreed that they have received support from various public institutions to rebuild their municipalities.
