Hotel group will invest more than 6 million euros in sustainable development agenda

SANTO DOMINGO.– Aware that its properties and tourism activities take place in natural environments and understanding the responsibility this entails for the environment and the communities in which it operates, Grupo Piñero will invest more than six million euros in its sustainable development agenda during 2023 to ensure environmental protection.

"Grupo Piñero will invest more than 4 million within the strategic axis of Natural Capital, specifically in its Comprehensive Coastal Management Plan in all its Caribbean destinations, and an additional 2.5 million in the Energy and Climate axis, for energy control and savings in the complexes," a press release states.

The company says it promotes responsible leadership aligned with the 2030 Agenda, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals, and championing “regenerative tourism”.

During the last edition of FITUR, the International Tourism Fair, the group presented an award to 7 companies for being “The Most Eco-Friendly” in the tourism sector, with the aim of recognizing the great work they do in terms of environmental sustainability.

The awards were presented to Air Canada Vacations, Baleària, Despegar, Expedia, Meliá Hotels International, Salesforce, and TUI Group. Grupo Piñero explains in the document that the selection process involved input from its employees, led by the sustainability division.

Prior to the awards ceremony, Isabel Piñero reflected on the Group's evolution and the crucial role that sustainability now plays in its business strategy: “In 2015, we began working on implementing a Corporate Social Responsibility model. It hasn't been easy, but what we can assure you is that, today, our sustainability strategy is our central focus, broken down into three key areas: governance, people, and planet,” she explained.

He explained that through the "We Are Ecoists" movement, they want to increase their commitment and involve society in bringing out the 'ecoist' within everyone. "A movement aimed at all those who, like us, notice and feel that this planet is also theirs.".

The executive highlighted the importance of the awards, with which they intend to "build alliances in favor of a transformative change in the sector, which will allow us to promote a more sustainable, fair and equitable planet, facing collective challenges such as climate change and the challenges of the 2030 Agenda.".

Piñero highlighted the environmental sustainability practices of the award winners: Air Canada Vacations with its Climate Action Plan; Baleària and its reduction of CO2 emissions; Despegar, which promotes and raises awareness about sustainable tourism; Expedia, which joined the Travalyst Coalition and signed the Glasgow Declaration for Climate Action in Tourism; Meliá Hotels International, recognized for its long track record in integrating ESG criteria into the company; Salesforce, for driving solutions aimed at achieving carbon neutrality with 'Net Zero Cloud'; and TUI Group, for its implementation of best practices in energy efficiency and decarbonization.
