Demand for cement grows despite rising costs
During the first quarter of 2022, local demand for cement grew by approximately 2.9% compared to the same period in 2021. This occurred despite increased costs for most essential inputs, particularly energy and fuel, which represent roughly 60% of variable costs in cement manufacturing. The Dominican Association of Portland Cement Producers (Adocem) stated that these increases have been occurring since 2021 and also include higher costs for machinery, imported spare parts, paper, and other inputs.

115 years later, the Lluberes Saviñón family claims land belonging to the National Palace
A new element has been added to the story surrounding the ownership of the land where the National Palace stands, specifically its original owner and how it came into the hands of the Dominican State in the early 20th century. The Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, has begun the process of registering the land of the presidential mansion to obtain a definitive title certificate, based on the understanding that part of it lacks any title and the other part was declared to be of public utility by the dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. This has generated displeasure among the great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren of Pedro Antonio Lluberes Saviñón, the man who donated the land to the State in 1907 to build the Santo Tomás de Aquino University, now the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.
Border towns, without urban planning
The border towns of Pepillo Salcedo, Jimaní, and Pedernales have been “forgotten” from an urban design perspective, stated Erick Dorrejo, director of the Ministry of Economy's Border Zone Development Policies, yesterday. With this in mind, the institution is working with professors from the University of Pennsylvania in the United States and local universities such as Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), and Ibero-American University (UNIBE) to develop urban development proposals. “What will this allow us to do? It will allow us to anticipate the significant investment the government has planned for these three areas so that the towns can prepare for it,” Dorrejo explained before the start of the first workshop.
Twelve people kidnapped from the Metro bus have not yet been released
The Deputy Minister of Consular and Migration Affairs, Jatzel Román, denied reports that the twelve passengers kidnapped after traveling to Haiti had been released. Román explained that it was a case of confusion between the bus lines Coach Line and Metro. “Coach Line is a Haitian company with a presence in Haiti, and the kidnapping involved only Haitian nationals, who were released today (yesterday),” the Deputy Minister said.

Last year, 100,243 vehicles were imported into the Dominican Republic for commercial purposes, of which 82,213 were used, representing 80%. The remaining 20% were new. Today, at a press conference, César de los Santos, president of the National Association of Vehicle Distribution Agencies (Anadive), stated that there are 2,062,292 commercial vehicles in the country, meaning there is one car for every six inhabitants.

During the first quarter of 2022, the Superintendency of Banks (SB), through the Office of Services and User Protection (ProUsuario), arranged the return of 29.4 million pesos to people who filed claims related to their products with financial intermediation entities.
