From Monday the 18th until Friday the 22nd, the Dominican Republic is hosting the Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week 2022 (LACCW 2022) to discuss climate progress in the world, as a prelude to the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27 to be held in Egypt.
SANTO DOMINGO – The Inter-American Cement Federation (FICEM) and the Dominican Association of Portland Cement Producers (ADOCEM) announced yesterday that they have joined forces to achieve carbon neutrality, in the context of the various meetings that will take place in the country as part of the Regional Climate Week, an event organized by UN Climate Change, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Bank Group.
The information was released by Julissa Báez, executive director of ADOCEM, who highlighted that, by assuming the commitment within the framework of Climate Week, the cement industry wants to reinforce the message that companies have a great opportunity to help build a more sustainable future as a result of the common concern for the planet we live on.
“The member companies of FICEM and ADOCEM work every day to reduce the impact of climate change, and these actions can be the foundation for a new era characterized by innovative potential and sustained economic growth, through a firm commitment to carbon neutrality. That is why we have joined this important global event,” Báez noted.
For her part, FICEM's Executive Vice President, María José García, stated: “Our commitment to climate action in our continent is permanent, and proof of this is that regional cement production has one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world, mainly as a result of increased energy efficiency in our kilns, the valorization of waste, either as alternative fuels to replace fossil fuels (co-processing), or as alternative raw materials to replace non-renewable mineral resources.”.
He also highlighted: “In addition to sharing strategies and commitments to achieve carbon neutrality for cement and concrete by 2050, and thanks to the combined efforts of cement producers Argos, Cemex, Domicem, Melón, Pacasmayo, UNACEM and Progreso, we will collectively contribute to Climate Week by offsetting the emissions generated by this event.”.
In this regard, several cement producers belonging to FICEM and ADOCEM will offset 100% of the carbon footprint generated by the event organizers and attendees through their operations. “We estimate emissions will be approximately 10,000 tons of CO2e. This is why we will document, measure, verify, and certify projects that further reduce CO2 in our industry. For example, increasing the co-processing rate in our kilns, using a higher percentage of carbon-neutral electricity, and reducing the clinker content in the cement will be the levers that enable carbon neutrality for this Climate Week,” said Ricardo Pareja, Innovation Leader at FICEM.
