SANTO DOMINGO. Travelers planning a trip to Europe should familiarize themselves with a new border control mechanism. The European Union announced, through a post on its official Instagram account, that starting October 12, 2025, the Schengen Area countries began gradually implementing the Entry/Exit System (EES), a digital platform that progressively replaces the traditional passport stamp and electronically records the entry and exit of travelers from third countries.
The measure represents a change in immigration control procedures for citizens of non-Schengen countries making short trips.
What is the EES system?
In that context, the Entry/Exit System (EES) is a digital system designed to electronically record the movements of travelers entering and leaving the Schengen territory.
With this tool, border authorities will have digital information about each visitor's crossings, instead of relying exclusively on stamps placed on travel documents.
Which travelers will it apply to?
In that same order, the mechanism is aimed at citizens of third countries who enter the Schengen Area for short stays, that is, a maximum of 90 days within a period of 180 days.
The measure will apply both to those who need a visa to travel and to those who are exempt from that requirement.
It is important to clarify that the EES does not replace the Schengen visa. When a person is required to have a visa, they must obtain it before traveling.
This is the data that will be recorded
During border controls, the system will store information related to the visitor's identity and movements. Key data collected includes:
- Traveler's name.
- Passport information.
- Date and place of entry.
- Date and place of departure.
- Fingerprints.
- Facial image.
The information will allow the generation of an electronic record of the movements made by each traveler within the authorized period.
The traditional passport stamp is a thing of the past
One of the most visible changes will be the gradual disappearance of the physical entry and exit stamp.
Instead, movements will be recorded digitally, allowing authorities to automatically check the length of stay of visitors and detect possible exceedances of the permitted period.
Implementation in 29 European countries
The new mechanism is planned to operate in 29 European countries through a phased implementation process.
During this transition period, passengers may experience new verification procedures at airports, ports, and other points of entry into the Schengen Area.
For this reason, travelers should pay attention to the instructions of border authorities and be prepared for possible variations in the control process when entering or leaving Europe.

Dominican citizens planning to travel to Europe should check in advance the immigration requirements for their trip, including visa conditions where applicable.
