Environment provides training in land-use planning to incorporate the environmental dimension

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources held a workshop with representatives from its various thematic areas, with the aim of promoting territorial development consistent with the principles of environmental conservation and sustainability.

During the workshop entitled Strategic Environmental Assessment in Territorial Planning Plans, Pedro García, director of Territorial Environmental Management of the ministry, highlighted the “beginning of a process that will lead the country to have policies, plans and programs that incorporate the environmental dimension in the planning instruments that have to do with high-level decision-making.”.

For his part, Winston González, in charge of Strategic Environmental Assessments at the Environmental Management Directorate, explained that this will cover territorial planning plans at the national, regional, municipal levels and, especially, those with supra-municipal impact.

González stated that: “This awareness workshop aims to incorporate environmental aspects into land-use planning and strategic environmental assessments, in accordance with Law 368-22, on Land Use Planning, Soil Use [and Human Settlements], and the terms of reference established by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.”.

The training was attended by authorities from the Vice-Ministries of Soils and Water, Coastal and Marine Resources, Climate Change and Sustainability, and Forest Resources, as well as representatives from the Legal, Environmental Regulations, Environmental Information, and Productive Landscape Project departments. The Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development (MEPyD) also participated.
