SANTO DOMINGO – When people think of a cargo plane, most imagine goods, vehicles, or containers. However, there was once an aircraft capable of transporting far more surprising objects, including locomotives, industrial generators, and equipment of extraordinary size. This was the Antonov An-225 Mriya, considered the largest airplane ever built.
A giant born for the space race
According to the Ukrainian aircraft manufacturer Antonov, the An-225 was developed during the 1980s to support the Soviet Union's space program. Its primary mission was to transport the Soviet Buran and large rocket components.
The aircraft measured approximately 84 meters long and had a wingspan of approximately 89 meters, dimensions that made it a true marvel of aeronautical engineering.
Six engines and a record capacity
What made the Mriya unique wasn't just its size. According to Antonov, the aircraft was equipped with six turbofan engines and could carry payloads exceeding 250 tons, a figure that remains impressive even today in the world of aviation.
Thanks to that capability, the An-225 transported gigantic industrial equipment, electric turbines, train cars and machinery for years that no other commercial aircraft could move in one go.
An aviation legend
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the An-225 set multiple world records related to weight carried and cargo capacity. Its name, Mriya, means "dream" in Ukrainian, a term that reflected the scale of the project.
The aircraft became a celebrity among aviation enthusiasts. Every time it landed at an airport, thousands of people flocked to get a close look at the six-engine behemoth.
An ending that shocked the world
During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the only operational An-225 was destroyed while at Hostomel Airport. The news generated reactions worldwide, especially among aviation experts and enthusiasts, who considered the Mriya a unique piece of aeronautical history.
Although it no longer flies, the Antonov An-225 is still remembered as the largest airplane ever built and one of the most impressive machines that humans have managed to lift into the sky.
