SANTO DOMINGO.- Tourism Minister David Collado yesterday broke ground on the reconstruction of Eugenio María de Hostos, Colón and Callejón Regina streets in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, a project with a cost exceeding 61 million pesos.
The intervention project will cover 7.11 km2 and includes sidewalks, curbs, lighting, landscaping, storm drains, street paving and road construction.
The renovations are being carried out in sections to minimize disruption to mobility and commerce, and to make the roads more accessible for pedestrians.
The project, managed by the Executive Committee for Infrastructure in Tourist Zones (CEIZTUR) of the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), has a budget of RD$ 61,592,250.
Collado reported that these works are part of the street rehabilitation project, which is progressing and is being carried out with funds from the Ministry of Tourism and the Inter-American Development Bank for an amount of 90 million dollars.
“We are here to launch more work on this great rehabilitation program for our historic Colonial City, where we have invested more than 400 million pesos in emblematic projects,” the official said.

He reported that 8 percent of tourists arriving in the country visit the Colonial City, which has caused great dynamism throughout the area.
The work to be carried out in sections consists of Colón Street between Vicente Celestino Duarte Street and the Angulo Fort, 190 linear meters; Hostos Street will be worked on between José Gabriel García and Padre Billini, about 187 meters and the one located between Mercedes and Arzobispo Meriño, another 202 linear meters.
In addition to the groundbreaking ceremony, the relaunch of the successful and popular Turizoneando program was announced, which will take place on weekends from now until June.
Sections to be intervened
The section of Colón Street between Vicente Celestino Duarte and Fuerte del Angulo to be intervened, which will be universally accessible, will involve the East Wall (wall), consisting of vehicular and pedestrian ramps, construction of the East sidewalk and expansion of the West sidewalk, paving, construction of planters and formalization of parking spaces.
It will also have horizontal and vertical signage, lighting, landscaping on its west sidewalk, and as equipment concrete benches, bollards and garbage receptacles.
On Hostos Street, the section from José Gabriel García to Padre Billini will have paving, the construction of a single platform for vehicular and pedestrian circulation with formalized parking.
It will also include electrical provisions for medium and low voltage, communication, maintenance, and stormwater drainage. It also includes horizontal and vertical signage, as well as equipment, bollards, and trapezoidal curbs.
Meanwhile, the historic and welcoming Callejón de Regina will receive an intervention on its 143 linear meters, which will in turn have a change of cobblestones in its northern section and maintenance in its southern section.
Landscaping will also be carried out, along with the supply of planters and bollards, and maintenance of the rainwater drainage system.
