SANTO DOMINGO –In the 1950s, Malcolm McLean proposed a modern alternative for cargo transport: shipping containers. Since then, this storage system has revolutionized trade and, for several years now, has also been a viable option for the construction industry.
With the aim of giving them a second chance and positively impacting the environment, shipping containers have been used to sustainably build modular homes, shopping centers, offices, restaurants, and more.
Thanks to their size, which ranges from 10 to 53 feet, they offer a sturdy and versatile structural base that lends itself to the creation of functional spaces, which have designs adapted to the tastes and needs of each person or business.
According to Elizabeth Mena, president of EM Estrategias y Soluciones and former president of the Dominican Association of Exporters (Adoexpo), the reuse of containers “reduces the demand for new construction materials and prevents them from ending up in landfills.”.

Furthermore, the process of adapting the containers consumes less energy and resources compared to traditional construction, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“Studies have shown that reusing shipping containers can significantly reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to constructing new buildings. Furthermore, reuse prevents material waste and maximizes resource efficiency, contributing to long-term environmental conservation,” Mena says.
“We are rescuing them and giving them a second life,” explains Garivalddy De Aza, architect and creator of Prismateiner, noting that these containers are manufactured daily and that many shipping companies prefer to abandon them in ports, since, in some cases, it is more expensive to collect them than to acquire a new one.

Construction
De Aza indicates that not all containers qualify. “You must find a unit that is in good condition and that has not been used to transport toxic materials.” It is also vital to consult with experts in the field, as proper thermal insulation is essential.
Being a modular construction, they offer the flexibility to be expanded to suit anyone's needs and can be prefabricated and then transported ready to any location. Furthermore, choosing this option would result in a 20% savings.
“Used containers can be purchased at affordable prices and then modified according to needs, including the installation of thermal and acoustic insulation, electrical and sanitary systems, and other features such as windows and doors,” Mena explains.
The professional recommends researching local regulations, obtaining necessary permits, and studying site conditions. “Proper planning is essential to maximize the functionality and comfort of the space, ensuring the use of quality materials to guarantee durability and safety.”.
