SANTO DOMINGO. The Emergency Operations Center (COE) maintains three provinces, including the National District, under yellow alert and six others under green alert, due to weather conditions associated with a trough interacting with the effects of easterly winds.
According to the report from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet), the trough continues to generate cloud concentrations that produce downpours accompanied by thunderstorms and gusts of wind in several locations throughout the national territory.
Yellow alert
The province of Santo Domingo, the National District and San Juan are under yellow alert.
The COE maintains this level of alert due to atmospheric conditions that could cause water accumulation and other effects associated with precipitation.
Green alert
Meanwhile, the provinces of Monte Plata, Valverde, Hato Mayor, La Altagracia, San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana remain under green alert.
Weather conditions will continue to favor the occurrence of downpours, thunderstorms and gusts of wind in different areas of the country.
They recommend avoiding rivers and spas
Given this situation, authorities recommend that the public refrain from crossing rivers, streams, and ravines with high water levels.
They also urge people not to use resorts located in the provinces that are under alert, as a preventive measure against possible flooding and other effects resulting from the rains.
What is a trough?
A trough is an elongated area of low atmospheric pressure that favors the ascent of air and the formation of clouds, conditions that can generate rain, downpours and thunderstorms in the areas under its influence.
What damage can the effects of a trough cause?
Rainfall generated by a trough can cause urban flooding when drainage systems are unable to quickly remove the accumulated water. It can also produce flash floods and overflows of rivers, streams, and ravines.
In the most vulnerable areas, heavy rainfall can cause landslides, affect homes and roads, disrupt traffic, and damage bridges and other infrastructure.
Thunderstorms and wind gusts associated with the phenomenon can also knock down trees, power poles and other elements, in addition to causing power outages and damage to structures.
For these reasons, the authorities are maintaining alert levels and recommend that the population stay attentive to official bulletins and avoid traveling through areas where there is a risk of flooding or rising water levels.
