SANTO DOMINGO.-The Emergency Operations Center (COE) is coordinating Operation Awareness for Life Holy Week 2023 starting today, which will involve dozens of public institutions in the prevention and response to incidents during this Holy Week.
The COE plans and directs all coordination actions between the institutions of the National System for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Response
The Minister of the Presidency, Joel Santos, assured yesterday that all relief agencies are prepared for this time of year, the result of preparations made months in advance.
Several institutions have announced their campaigns separately, but all will operate under the operation that the COE begins today.
“All the relief agencies are prepared for this Holy Week, a preparation that is done months in advance in every sense, and we are very confident that Holy Week will take place in the safest way possible,” Santos said.
He indicated that the authorities will focus their efforts on road safety, security at the main beaches, resorts and entertainment areas, and raising public awareness.
In that last aspect, the official asked the population to be prudent, respect traffic rules, avoid alcohol consumption and get enough sleep before driving on the roads of the national territory.
Security
The National Police began a program on Tuesday to increase patrols in streets, beaches and residential areas, with more than 40,000 officers deployed.
In addition, 10,000 Civil Defense volunteers will participate, stationed at aid posts in strategic locations.
The director of the PN, Eduardo Alberto Then, specified that this will be carried out in support and close coordination with the COE, according to the work plan designed for the joint operation between the institutions of the National System of Prevention, Mitigation and Response.
The deployment began yesterday, Wednesday, at 2:00 p.m. and ends on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
"Members of the Preventive and Investigative Police, reaction and specialized units will be on the streets, in neighborhoods, urbanizations, shopping centers, banking institutions, rivers, resorts and beaches day and night to enforce the measures recommended by the COE," Then said.
Defense
The day before, the Ministries of Defense and Tourism and the National Police announced their support for the COE in the operation to prevent and respond to any eventuality that may arise during the holiday.
Defense will increase the presence and patrol routes on the streets, and will increase the presence of uniformed and intelligence personnel at land transport terminals
In addition, the presence of uniformed and intelligence personnel will be increased at land transport terminals, specifically bus terminals, toll booths, and both prohibited and open beach resorts.
Transit
The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) and the General Directorate of Transit and Land Transportation Safety (Digesett) launched an operation yesterday to reduce traffic accidents.
The device was installed at the five points with the most intense traffic during Holy Week: Boca Chica, Las Terrenas, Cabarete, Jarabacoa, Cruce de Ocoa and Los Pilones on the Sánchez Highway.
Authorities will focus on critical locations along the Duarte Highway, Las Américas Highway, 6 de Noviembre Avenue, Sánchez Highway, Autovía del Este, Coral Highway, Gregorio Luperón Highway, Northeast Highway, Mella Highway, Gregorio Luperón Highway, and Enriquillo Highway.
