SANTO DOMINGO.– DP World Dominicana and Cemex Dominicana signed a collaboration agreement yesterday, Tuesday, that will allow them to move closer to the common goal of becoming companies with zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and thus minimize the effects of climate change.
The alliance will allow Cemex to convert the waste from tires produced by the logistics solutions provider into alternative fuel through co-processing, under health and safety standards, in a controlled space that guarantees environmental protection, according to a press release.
Morten Johansen, CEO of DP World Dominicana, highlighted that the signing of the agreement responds to the efforts they make to operate sustainably, aligned with the global sustainability strategy "Our World, Our Future", specifically through the priority area of Climate Change and its Decarbonization Strategy.
"Our global decarbonization strategy aims to establish a comprehensive plan across all divisions to achieve a 28% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, carbon neutrality by 2040, and to become a net-zero emissions operation by 2050," Johansen stated.
The press release indicates that Cemex, through its "Future in Action" strategy, seeks to develop products, solutions, and processes with lower carbon emissions, with ambitious goals for 2030, including a 47% reduction (*) in CO2 emissionsper ton of cementitious material and a commitment to increase clean energy consumption to 65% by 2030.
Likewise, the multinational, through its "Regenera" initiative, seeks to provide circularity solutions, including the reception, handling, recycling, and co-processing of non-recyclable solid waste, which allows them to replace the use of conventional fossil fuels with alternative ones.
In that regard, José Antonio Cabrera Guerra, general manager of Cemex in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, stated that the company has more than twenty years of experience and global innovation, where it has managed to replace up to 90% of fossil fuels with alternative fuels in Europe.
He added that the cement industry is a net consumer of waste, making it well-suited for a circular economy due to its ability to co-process waste in its production process. The high temperatures in a cement kiln ensure that this process generates neither waste nor pollutants. Co-processing benefits society by reducing the use of fossil fuels and, therefore, the CO2 intensity of cement manufacturing, as well as by decreasing landfill waste, a major source of methane emissions.
