SANTO DOMINGO- "The First City, Genesis of Urbanism in the New World" is the book released this week by architect Mayobanex Suazo, in which the author explains the urban evolution of the city of Santo Domingo, the First City of America.
Suazo is a prominent Dominican urban planner, with extensive national and international training on territorial urbanization, recognized for his career as an educator and researcher.
The writer argued that the starting point of the work is to show the inner workings of a city that has become the main capital of Central America and the Caribbean.
"A city that awakens passions, especially in those of us who have chosen urban planning as the guiding principle of our professional work.".
He commented that the work analyzes the sociocultural and environmental aspects that affect Santo Domingo today, in order to understand the problems generated throughout its evolutionary process.
"This last approach, in an interesting piece of writing provided for this book by Dr. Sylvia Kloster, Director of Climate Change and Sustainable Development at the Ministry of Ecology of the Argentine Republic," Suazo indicated.
He said that motivated by a genuine and passionate interest in his city, he concluded by presenting an urban and environmental proposal that takes advantage of the geographical potential of the area to effectively insert it into the sustainability movement.
He stated that in order to optimally manage the needs reflected in the diagnosis that will serve as a basis, in order to offer solutions that correspond to the urban growth of the Dominican capital, and to make it a more sustainable habitat.
The author of La Primada identified the lack of urban planning as one of the historical ills that have affected the city of Santo Domingo.
"After Diego and Ovando, 95% of the territory of Santo Domingo has grown without planning," he stated during his keynote address at the presentation of the work.
Regarding the urban development of the city of Santo Domingo, urban planner Suazo criticized the "poor participation" of urban planners in the Territorial Planning Law currently being implemented in the country, demanding the technical involvement of more architects in structuring the regulations for the application of the aforementioned legislation, with urban development plans.
He acknowledged that important steps have been taken in recent years, especially in the National District, with respect to strengthening land-use planning.
